After a thorough search of candidates, the Cubs will announce San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria as their new manager, according to a CSN source. When Renteria is officially hired on Thursday afternoon he will become the 53rd manager in franchise history.

The Cubs initially showed heavy interest in Yankees skipper Joe Girardi, only to watch him stay in New York. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer then moved on to other candidates such as former Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge and Brad Ausmus, who recently was named the manager of the Detroit Tigers.

On Monday, CSN's David Kaplan reported the Cubs were close to ending their search and had their eyes set on Renteria.

Update: CSN's David Kaplan reports that Renteria's teleconference with the Cubs will be Thursday afternoon:

Before Jake Peavy won his first World Series with the Boston Red Sox, the veteran pitcher caught up with CSN's Dan Hayes to talk about his time in San Diego with Renteria.
