The Cubs finalized their first wave of September call-ups on Tuesday, recalling infielder Javier Baez and Tsuyoshi Wada from Triple-A Iowa. Outfielder Quintin Berry and right-hander Trevor Cahill also were added to the 40-man roster, while outfielder Austin Jackson was added to the active roster.

Baez will start at second base tonight when the Cubs open a three-game series against the Reds at Wrigley Field. The Cubs' 2009 first-round draft pick batted .324//.385/.912 with 13 homers and 61 RBIs in 70 games with Iowa this season. He also stole 17 bases and enters the Friendly Confines touting a 16-game hitting streak. Baez made his MLB debut last year with the Cubs, batting .169 with nine homers and 20 RBIs in 52 games.

James Russell and Rafael Soriano were designated for assignment to make room for Berry and Cahill on the 40-man roster. Russell went 0-2 with a .529 ERA in 49 relief appearances in 2015. Soriano, signed in June, went 2-0 with a 6.35 ERA in six appearances out of the bullpen.

Jackson was acquired Monday from Seattle in exchange for a player to be named later and an international-signing slot. Jackson was hitting .272 with eight homers, 38 RBIs and 15 stolen bases with the Mariners and will give the Cubs much-needed outfield depth with Jorge Soler on the disabled list.

Berry signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Aug. 24 after spending the season with Triple-A Pawtucket (Boston). He's 30-for-30 on stolen base attempts, including 5-for-5 in the postseason, in his career.

Cahill signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Aug. 18 and threw 7.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in five appearances.

The Cubs' 40-man roster now stands at 40, while their active roster includes 30 players.
