The Cubs and the Wrigley Field rooftop owners may not have an agreement in place, but the organization is doing their best to get the $500 million Wrigley Field renovation project underway.
Monday, the Cubs filed for a permit for the advertising sign in right field, according to Crain's. The 650-square-foot see-through sign is a projected part of the renovation project, and also the most hotly debated items between the Cubs and the rooftop owners.
The Cubs presented an optimistic front about breaking ground on the renovation project at the Cubs Convention earlier this month, but hit another roadblock last week, prompted by a dispute over the sign in right field. the rooftop owners claim the sign would block their view.
The Cubs were initially supposed to break ground on the Wrigleyville project after the 2013 season, but the threat of litigation from the rooftop owners has delayed the process. The Cubs have a revenue-sharing deal with the rooftop owners that runs through the 2023 season, an agreement the Ricketts family inherited when they bought the team in 2009.
The Wrigleyville Rooftops Association released a statement shortly after news broke of the Cubs filing for the sign permit.
"This is an unfortunate turn of events because our hope was to find a solution to this matter. Rooftop owners believe any blockage of our views violates the contract we have with the owners of the Cubs. We have instructed our legal team to proceed accordingly," said Ryan McLaughlin of the Wrigleyville Rooftops Association.
