The Cubs agreed to a minor-league contract with pitcher Joel Pineiro on Tuesday.
Pineiro last pitched in the majors with the Los Angeles Angels in 2011 where he posted a 7-7 record with a 5.13 ERA in 27 games.
The veteran right-hander spent the last few months playing winter ball in Puerto Rico, vying for an opportunity to make it back into MLB.
The 35-year-old Pineiro has a career record of 104-92 with a 4.41 ERA in 12 MLB seasons with the Seattle Mariners (2000-2006), Boston Red Sox (2007), St. Louis Cardinals (2007-2009) and Angels (2011).
Pineiro will report to Triple-A Iowa where he will begin his comeback attempt.
