From one top prospect to another, welcome to the Cubs.
That's what went down Friday night. Shortly after the Cubs pulled off a blockbuster trade that sent Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland, Kris Bryant welcomed the centerpiece of the Cubs' return package, Addison Russell, to the organization via Twitter.
And, Russell excitedly returned the greeting.
@KrisBryant_23 Thanks buddy! Told myself in the fall league it would be great to play with you again someday. Pretty stoked about the move— Addison Russell (@Addison_Russell) July 5, 2014
Bryant was rated the No. 8 prospect in baseball before the season by Baseball America. Fellow Cubs up-and-comer Javier Baez rated No. 5. Russell was the A's top prospect and the No. 14 farmhand in the game. They're now all a part of the Cubs organization following Friday's trade, which also netted the Cubs Billy McKinney, Oakland's No. 2 prospect, and pitcher Dan Straily.
Bryant and Baez are currently teammates at Triple-A Iowa. It's unknown where Russell will end up, but he's been playing with the A's Double-A affiliate in Midland. Russell has played just 18 minor league games this season between Class-A Stockton and Midland.
