The Cubs' blockbuster trade with the Oakland A's made quite the splash around the league over the holiday weekend, and Justin Verlander couldn't help but wonder if the A's had the Tigers in mind at the time of the deal.
"I found it very interesting," Verlander told reporters Saturday, according to MLB.com. "Really, when I saw that trade, I thought that they made that trade for us. No doubt about it in my mind."
Detroit's topped Oakland in the playoffs the last two seasons, and Verlander is confident the trade for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel is the A's way to attempt a push past the Tigers for a chance to go all the way.
"If they want to win the World Series, they're envisioning that they have to go through us, and, even though it's been two fantastic series, it's been heartbreaking for them the last two years," he said.
