With the conclusion of the MLS regular season, the terms of the Fires acquisition of Wells Thompson took another step towards completion: The Colorado Rapids will receive Chicagos second round pick of the MLS SuperDraft.
The original terms of the deal that saw Thompson swap Colorado for Chicago included the Men in Red sending a conditional draft pick in the other direction. The exact specifics of the conditions were not released per MLS policy, however the Rapids reported on their website, The conditions of the trade were met, meaning that Colorado receives the Fires natural second round SuperDraft selection.
The exact placement of the draft pick will be determined on the Fires performance in the MLS Cup Playoffs, according to the Rapids. The pick can be as high as 11th in the round (30th overall) if the team loses its Knockout Round match Wednesday against Houston. If the Fire win their second MLS Cup, however, the pick can be as low as 19th in the round (38th overall).
Thompson, 28, was acquired back in September and has only featured in four matches for the Fire, amassing a total of 65 minutes on the pitch.
The Fire will play in their first playoff game since 2009 on Wednesday when they host the Houston Dynamo at Toyota Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
