Must-see goal: Fire trialist Goossens' long-range volley

It's only the preseason, but Chicago Fire trialist John Goossens scored what would have been a lock for goal of the year had it come in an official match.

The 27-year-old unleashed a jaw-dropping long-range volley in a scrimmage against the University of Portland on Thursday night. A ball popped up to him in midfield, he chested it high into the air and crushed the ball with a left-footed volley. The goalkeeper could only stare as the ball rocketed towards the far corner of the net.

The match finished a 1-1 tie, but all that really mattered is that the Fire were able to put the goal on Vine for all to see.

Goossens has been on trial with the Fire since midway through the team's training stint in Tampa earlier this month. Goossens had an assist in the 4-2 win against Philadelphia on Feb. 11.

The Dutch midfielder has more than 100 career appearances in the Eredivisie, the top league in the Netherlands. Considering the lack of depth on the Fire's roster, the club has just 21 players under contract right now, play like Goossens has shown during his trial has to improve his chances of getting a contract offer.

Believe it or not, it's not even the first time Goossens has scored a goal like this. He pulled one off when he played for NEC Nijmegen in his home country.
