The Bears without a doubt did the smart thing by signing Matt Forte to a long term deal. The fact that it took this long is a bit surprising, but Bears fans should be happy to know they will have one of the most versatile and productive running backs on the roster for another four seasons.What will be interesting to watch is the amount of guaranteed money in the deal. In the NFL that is the only real number that means anything. It was believed Forte was looking for upwards of 20 million guaranteed. I'm guessing if the total package is actually 32 million, he got around what he was seeking.Too many teams make the mistake of thinking they can replace star players by simply inserting another top level talent, and often times that decision backfires. Forte has proven his value to THIS offense, and if the Bears want to compete for a division title and beyond they need him on the roster plain and simple.Not to mention, I'm very happy this topic won't dominate training camp next week.
