Lewis: Marshall helping, but also hurting Bears' offense

Share

Everyone knew that Brandon Marshall was going to be the focus of the passing game this season, but did anyone think it would be a one man show? So far Marshall is on pace to have 72 more receptions than the next closest wideout on the team. It may be great for Marshall, but not as good for the Bears' offense.

The trio of Alshon Jeffery, Earl Bennett and Devin Hester have a total of 37 receptions, and as good as Marshall has been, his performance has hampered the unit from using all of it's weapons. Spreading the ball around more will also make it more difficult for opposing defenses to focus on Marshall.

Marshall admitted himself today that more guys need to be involved and contribute. Regardless, he will get his catches and still be the Bears' go-to guy, but the teams in the NFL that have the greatest success in the passing game utilize all of their weapons. Think Packers, Saints and Patriots.

Brandon Marshall is a unique talent and has a knack for always being on the same page as Jay Cutler, which perhaps makes it hard to look elsewhere, but in the long run sharing the wealth will benefit the offense as a whole.
