Bears general manager Phil Emery may have the opportunity to bag more groceries for the Bears July 12.
There is not much fanfare, but the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft is scheduled for this Thursday. The Supplemental Draft is pretty straight forward. Im not going to bore you with the process, but the supplemental draft uses a weighted, three step, semi- lottery system to determine draft order. Organizations simply email a draft card to the league office as notification with the player name and round of their selection. The team highest in the round to select a player receives the spoils. Its pretty simple, resulting in the team losing that round selected in next years NFL Draft.
The Bears, like most teams, should be interested in Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon.
Gordon is 6-foot-4, weighs 225 pounds with not much playing experience, but a ton of talent. Pro Football Talk's Evan Silva recently reported an NFC source grading Gordon as a third round selection.
I recently discussed Gordon with an AFC scout who said, Hes the total package..rare guy. He is a better athletetalent then Kendall Wright and its not that close. Hes a better athlete than (Justin) Blackmon.
This is now two scouts who have Gordon rated as the superior athlete when compared to his former Baylor teammate Kendall Wright, who was drafted in the first round by the Tennessee Titans this past April.
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Blackmon with the 7th overall pick in the first round.
Gordon will have the opportunity to increase his stock, holding his pro-day tomorrow as reported by Tony Pauline of SI.com.
Gordons athleticism might prompt Phil Emery to at least think about selecting him in the second round. With Brandon Marshalls history of off-the-field issues, the Bears could nicely pad the pillow by selecting Gordon to be groomed alongside second-round pick Alshon Jeffery. Although Gordon has fallen through the cracks, transferring from Baylor to Utah and then, according to Pauline, tried to transfer back to Texas to attend Stephen F. Austin, only to run out of money.
Pauline also added most teams would rather groom a young draft pick under their own coaching rather than a one and done situation Gordon is in.
Gordon for the most part is a good kid and a quick learner coming from a one parent home in Houston. There is some marijuana usage in Gordons past, but he would not be the first player, nor will be the last, to encounter this issue for teams not to consider him.
