The NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reported today that the Chicago Bears and running back Matt Forte are "extremely close" on a long-term contract, according to sources he spoke with Saturday.
The two sides have until Monday to come to an agreement before Forte will be required to sign a franchise tag of 7.749 million. Forte has beenadamantabout saying he will not sit out any of the regular season, but it is clear the 26-year-old running back is looking for long-term security. Forte has hinted at wanting "market value," which could be a five-year investment for Chicago.
The Bears open training camp Thursday, July 26 in Bourbonnais.
Last season Forte rushed for 997 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games before a knee injury forced him to miss the last four games of the season.
Forte's back-up, Marion Barber, retired this off-season and the Bears signed Michael Bush to a four-year, 14 million. Bush rushed for 977 yards and seven touchdowns with the Raiders last year, splitting time with the oft-injured Darren McFadden.
