Sick Bay: Forte, Melton improvement welcomed

Running back Matt Forte and defensive tackle Henry Melton, the former coming out of the Arizona game with an ankle injury, the latter never getting on the field because of a chest injury, both were able to practice Thursday on a limited basis.

Fortes work took on added significance with backup Armando Allen again missing practice with the knee injury suffered in the Arizona game.

Forte is making a lot of progress; was able to get some reps in today, said coach Lovie Smith. He looked pretty good. Were hopeful for him, which we thought all along. I know hes been pretty optimistic about the plan. So hopefully that will be the case.

Safety Chris Conte (hamstring) and linebackers Blake Costanzo (calf) and Brian Urlacher (hamstring) also were out of practice altogether as hope dims for Urlacher making a return in Detroit.

Another positive: tackle Jonathan Scott was able to go through of all of practice for the first time since injuring his hamstring in the Green Bay game.

The Lions got wide receiver Calvin Johnson (kneeankle) back on a limited basis but were still without safety Louis Delmas (knee), defensive tackle Sammie Hill (toe) and tight end Brandon Pettigrew (ankle).
