It's been quite the afternoon for former NHL star Adam Oates, who has been hired as the head coach of the Washington Capitals and elected into Hockey Hall of Fame within hours of one another.
In addition, Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, and Pavel Bure have all be named as well, leaving out other close contenders such as Brendan Shanahan and Jeremy Roenick.
Oates earned 1,420 points in 1,337 games throughout his 27-year career. While in the NHL, he played for the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, and Edmonton Oilers.
Joe Sakic led the boards going into today's announcement. The former Avalanche captain spent his entire career in Colorado, leading his team to Stanley Cup victories in 1996 and 2001. He recorded 1,641 points in 1,378 games.
Mats Sundin spent 18 years in the league, recording 1,349 points in 1,346 games played. He spent the majority of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but played his final season with the Vancouver Canucks.
Pavel Bure's career wasn't as lengthy as the other's, but he sure made a big impact for his teams. He spent his first seven seasons with the Canucks before playing for the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers. He recorded 779 points in 702 games throughout his time in the NHL.
