EAST LANSING, Mich. - Kalin Lucas scored 25 points, lifting Michigan State to a 61-57 win over Illinois on Saturday night.

The Spartans (15-11, 7-7 Big Ten) have won two of three after losing five of six to bolster their shot at playing in a 14th straight NCAA tournament.

The Fighting Illini (17-10, 7-7) have lost three of five to make it more difficult to earn one of the coveted 68 spots in college basketball's showcase next month.

Michigan State scored nine straight points after the game was tied at 51 to pull away in a closely contested game that had postseason-like intensity.

Demetri McCamey had 15 points, Mike Davis scored 15 and Brandon Paul added 12 for Illinois.

Lucas didn't get much help offensively. Keith Appling scored nine points, Durrell Summers had all eight of his points in the first half and Delvon Roe added eight, including a low-post shot that put the Spartans ahead by four with 1 12 minutes left.

West Virginia beats No. 8 Notre Dame
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. --Truck Bryant broke out of a slump by scoring 24 points, West Virginia took command early in the second half and beat No. 8 Notre Dame 72-58 on Saturday, ending the Irish's seven-game winning streak.Joe Mazzulla added 16 points, and Kevin Jones had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers (17-9, 8-6 Big East), who got a badly needed win against a ranked opponent to prop up their NCAA tournament hopes.Ben Hansbrough led Notre Dame (21-5, 10-4) with 19 points before fouling out. Carleton Scott added 11 points and Tyrone Nash scored 10.

Thompson leads Northwestern past Indiana 70-64

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michael Thompson scored 22 points and John Shurna finished with 19 to lead Northwestern past Indiana 70-64 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats (16-10, 6-9 Big Ten), winners of two in a row, won for only the second time in school history at Assembly Hall. They also swept the Hoosiers for the second time in three years.

Indiana (12-15, 3-11) was led by Verdell Jones with 18 points and Jordan Hulls with 14.

It wasn't easy for Northwestern, which built a 10-point halftime lead and then had to stave off Indiana's second-half rally.

The Hoosiers tied the score twice in the final 10 minutes, at 52 and again at 57. But Thompson broke the second tie with two free throws and Drew Crawford followed that with a 3 to make it 62-57 with 5:50 left.

Indiana spent the rest of the night playing catch-up but couldn't get closer than 67-64.

Fisher scores 34, 'Nova beats DePaul 77-75 in OT

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Corey Fisher scored a career-high 34 points, nailing the tying 3-pointer near the end of regulation, and No. 15 Villanova beat DePaul 77-75 in overtime Saturday.

Maalik Wayns added 17 as the Wildcats escaped with a tough win over the Big East's last-place team. DePaul had dropped 12 straight overall and 25 in a row in the conference before beating Providence on Thursday, then giving Villanova all it could handle.

Fisher simply carried the Wildcats from all areas, converting acrobatic drives and burying shots from the perimeter. He hit 5 of 8 3-pointers, none bigger than the one he nailed with six seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 62.

Jeremiah Kelly led DePaul (7-19, 1-13) with 25 points, hitting 7 of 13 3-pointers. Cleveland Melvin scored 16 and Moses Morgan added 15, but the Blue Demons came up just a little short.

Seck's shot lifts Southern Illinois to 61-60 win

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Mamadou Seck hit a layup with 1 second left Saturday to lift Southern Illinois to a 61-60 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay in a BracketBusters game.

Seck grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw by Green Bay's Alec Brown with 8 seconds remaining, then scored the game-winner on the other end for the Salukis (12-16), who won for only the second time in their last nine games.

Carlton Fay led Southern Illinois with 14 points. Seck added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Justin Bocot had 10 points.

Rahmon Fletcher had 22 points for Green Bay (12-16), moving him past Richard Sims into sixth place on the Phoenix's all-time scoring list with 1,633 points. Jarvis Williams added 11 points and Brown had 10 for Green Bay, which lost for the fifth straight time.

The Phoenix had taken a 60-59 lead on Bryquis Perine's basket with 23 seconds remaining.

Ward, Western Michigan edge Illinois State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Demetrius Ward scored 14 points and hit two late free throws that gave Western Michigan the lead for good in a 68-65 BracketBusters victory over Illinois State on Saturday.

Ward hit double figures for the 10th straight game, and Alex Wolf and Matt Stainbrook had 12 points apiece for the Broncos (15-10), who won their third in a row.

Austin Hill led the Redbirds (11-17) with 12 points. Justin Clark hit three 3-pointers and scored 11, while Jon Ekey scored 10 for Illinois State, which has dropped six in a row. Tony Lewis had a game-high eight rebounds.

Howard leads Butler past Illinois-Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) Matt Howard scored 19 points Saturday to lead Butler to its sixth straight victory in a 79-52 decision over Illinois-Chicago.

Andrew Smith added 16 points for the Bulldogs (20-9, 12-5), percentage points out of second place in the Horizon League. Shawn Vanzant scored 11, and Shelvin Mack had 10 points for his 13th consecutive game in double figures. Mack also had a game-best six assists, and Howard and Smith grabbed nine rebounds apiece.

Paul Carter's 15 points paced the Flames (7-22, 2-15), who shot just 38.2 percent and have lost six of seven. Robo Kreps added 10 points.

Warren catapults Bradley past Tennessee-Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) Walt Lemon Jr. scored 20 points and Andrew Warren 16 as Bradley came back to beat Tennessee-Martin 81-75 in a nonconference game on Saturday.

Warren scored 12 of his points in the second half, when the Braves (10-18) of the Missouri Valley Conference shot 53.8 percent (14 of 26) to 30.6 percent (11 of 36) for the Skyhawks (10-19) of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Tennessee-Martin led 44-39 after a first half in which Troy King scored 17 of his 20 points and made 5 of 6 shots from 3-point range.

The Skyhawks led 64-56 with 10:40 remaining, but Bradley tied it by scoring the next eight points. The Braves went ahead to stay, 69-68, on Jake Eastman's layup with 4:09 to play.

Warren secured the win with four free throws in the final 17 seconds.

Dyricus Simms-Edwards had 15 points for Bradley, and Terence Smith had 15 for Tennessee-Martin.

Granger leads Eastern Illinois past Toledo 75-58

TOLEDO, Ohio - Jeremy Granger scored 20 points to lead four Eastern Illinois players in double figures as the Panthers defeated Toledo 75-58 on Saturday night, snapping an eight-game losing streak.

Granger was 13 of 13 from the free-throw line for Eastern Illinois (9-18), which hit 20 of 22 foul shots in the nonconference matchup.

The Panthers led by as many as nine in the first half and 33-28 at halftime.

The Rockets (4-23), who lost their ninth straight, closed the gap to 35-34 with 17:16 to go. Eastern Illinois answered with a 12-0 run, with Shaun Pratl scoring seven points and Curry McKinney five.

Curry finished with 17 points and Pratl and James Hollowell each added 11 points for the Panthers, who shot 48 percent from the field (24 of 59).

Jay Shunnar scored 16 points to lead Toledo, which shot 39.6 percent from the field (19 of 48) and made 9 of 28 3-pointers.

Seattle turns back Northern Illinois 60-48

DE KALB, Ill. - Cervante Burrell scored 15 points and Seattle limited Northern Illinois to 12 points in the first half of a 60-48 BracketBusters victory Saturday.

Aaron Broussard had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Redhawks (10-16), who had lost four of five. Alex Jones added 12 points and Sterling Carter 11.

Michael Patton scored 15 points and Antone Christian 12 for the Huskies (7-18), who lost their seventh straight.

Northern Illinois shot just 33.3 percent (19 of 57) and 17.6 percent (3 of 17) from 3-point range. But that was better than Seattle, which shot 30.9 percent (17 of 55) and 11.1 percent (1 of 9) from long distance.

The difference came at the line, where the Redhawks went 25 of 31 and the Huskies 7 of 9.

Seattle led 28-8 before Patton got the Huskies into double figures at 28-10 with 2:27 left in the first half.

St. Peter's gets past Loyola of Chicago 71-67

CHICAGO - Wesley Jenkins and Nick Leon scored 17 points apiece as St. Peter's held off Loyola of Chicago 71-67 Saturday in a BracketBusters game.

Jenkins hit five 3-pointers and Leon four as the Peacocks (17-11) shot 43.5 percent (10 of 23) from long range in winning for the eighth time in 10 games. Ryan Bacon scored 14 points and Jeron Belin 13.

Geoff McCammon scored 20 points and set the single-season 3-point record for the Ramblers (15-13). McCammon made four 3-pointers, giving him 78 and breaking Derek Molis' record of 75. Terrance Hill scored 15 and Courtney Stanley 10, and Andy Polka had 10 rebounds.

The Peacocks held their largest lead at 51-41 with 7:49 to play, and they were up 65-56 with 3:24 left when Loyola rallied.

Ben Averkamp and Stanley scored four points each to pull the Ramblers within 65-64 with 1:13 left, but St. Peter's held on.

Southern Utah in playoffs, beats W. Illinois 68-63

MACOMB, Ill. - Jackson Stevenett scored 15 points as Southern Utah fought off Western Illinois 68-63 on Saturday night.

Ray Jones, Kyle Davis and Damon Heuir added 10 points apiece for the Thunderbirds (10-17, 6-10), who won their second in a row and clinched a spot in the Summit League tournament.

Matt Lander scored a career-high 26 points and almost single-handedly rescued the Leathernecks (7-20, 2-14), but they were eliminated from postseason consideration as their losing streak reached 10. Lander notched his 12th straight double-figure game. Kaimarr Price added 12 points.

The Leathernecks trailed 60-55 with 2:21 to go when Lander began a string of eight straight Western Illinois points that trimmed the deficit to 64-63 with 21 seconds left. But Jones replied with four free throws over the final 18 seconds, and Western Illinois missed two 3-pointers.

Southern Utah made 20 of 32 shots (62.5 percent) and outrebounded Western Illinois 25-18.
