SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jerian Grant had 19 points, eight assists and six steals Sunday to lead Notre Dame to a 93-60 non-conference victory over Army on Sunday.
Garrick Sherman added 19 points and seven rebounds as the Fighting Irish (4-1) forced 22 Army turnovers and held the Black Knights to 5 of 25 shooting from 3-point range.
Dylan Cox scored 11 points to lead Army (1-4), which has lost three straight.
The Irish, playing their second game in three days following their first loss of the season last Sunday to Indiana State, won their second straight and improved to 9-0 all-time against Army.
Army, which came in averaging nearly 34 3-point attempts per game, missed its first nine 3-pointers before Kyle Wilson finally connected with 14:04 to play.
Sherman scored 10 straight points for the Irish early in the second half to get their lead up to 13. Eric Atkins was just 2-for-13 from the floor before he connected on a 3 with 14:35 left. His second 3 came near the start of an 18-0 Irish burst that put the game away, pushing their lead to 33 points with 3:40 to play. Army did not hit a field goal for over 6 minutes before ending the run.
Loyola edges SIU-Edwardsville, 73-72
PORTLAND, Ore. — Christian Thomas, Jeff White and Matt O'Leary scored 14 points apiece and Loyola edged SIU-Edwardsville, 73-72, at the Portland State Tournament on Sunday.
Loyola shot 57 percent from the field and made 42 percent of 3-point attempts while SIUE shot 51 percent overall and 42 percent from beyond the arc in a game where each team lead by no more than 5 points.
SIUE (1-5) led 35-33 at the half following several lead changes. That trend continued into the second half with Loyola (3-4) calling a timeout while leading 71-70 with 2 minutes left. Both teams missed key shots and free throw opportunities in the intense final minutes, but Devon Turk's lay-up at 1:20 was all Loyola needed to hang on for the win.
Donivine Stewart led the Cougars with 22 points and Michael Messer added 14.
