ROSEMONT — Cleveland Melvin scored 23 points to lead DePaul to an 81-72 victory over Wright State on Saturday in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
Brandon Young added 14 points, Tommy Hamilton had 13 and Billy Garrett had 12 for the Blue Demons (2-1).
J.T. Yoho led Wright State with 13 points. Matt Vest and A.J. Pacher each had 11 points. The Raiders (1-2) shot 50 percent to DePaul's 55 percent.
The Raiders led by as many as nine points but weren't able to put away the Blue Demons. Young hit a jumper with 4:16 remaining for a 69-68 DePaul lead, the Blue Demons' first lead since late in the first half.
Charles McKinney then stole the ball on the inbounds pass and fed it to Young for a layup and a 71-68 DePaul lead.
A pair of free throws and a jumper by Melvin and a free throw by Hamilton increased the lead to six with 2:06 remaining.
DePaul went 6-of-8 at the foul line in the final minutes and Melvin dunked in the final seconds to seal the victory. The Blue Demons went 28-of-36 at the free-throw line.
Loyola blows another double-digit lead, falls to Tulane
NEW ORLEANS — Jonathan Stark made 8 of 11 field goals for 25 points including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:41 to go in Tulane's 19-point second-half comeback, a 65-59 win over Loyola Chicago.
Louis Dabney tied the game at 55-55 with 2:39 to go on a 3-pointer assisted by Stark. The Green Wave (3-0) continued with Stark's 3-pointer and a layup by Dabney. Dabney finished with 25 points and, together with Stark, scored 39 of the Green Wave's 46 second-half points.
The Ramblers (1-2) closed the lead to 60-57, but Tulane answered with a layup from Cameron Reynolds and three free-throws from Reynolds and Stark.
Loyola led 40-21 with 17:25 to go in the second half. This is the second game this year they've lost with a double-digit lead.
Christian Thomas led the Ramblers with 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Eastern Illinois bests UIC in 86-66 blowout
Reggie Smith scored a career-high 23 points on 7 of 13 shooting and added six assists to advance Eastern Illinois to an 86-66 win over the University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday.
After Marc Brown's jumper with 11:11 left in the first half trimmed the Eastern Illinois lead to 14-13, the Panthers (2-1) used a 17-2 run to pull away and maintained its lead for the duration of the game. EIU shot 57.1 percent from the floor and made 9 of 14 3-pointers and took a 40-27 lead into halftime.
The Flames (1-2) suffered from lackluster shooting (40.4 percent), though Brown had 20 points on 6 of 11 field goals. Kelsey Barlow had 12 points and seven assists and Jordan Harks shot 6 of 10 while scoring 13 points off the bench.
Luke Piotrowski had three of Eastern Illinois' nine blocked shots.
