Brian Kelly says both DeShone Kizer, Malik Zaire will play vs. Texas

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Brian Kelly hasn't seen any separation in his team's quarterback battle and plans to play both DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire in Notre Dame's Sept. 4 season opener against Texas.

"My ultimate decision is that I can't put one of those guys on the sideline against Texas," Kelly said Wednesday.

How the quarterbacks interchange will vary on a drive-to-drive basis, with some situational aspects taken into account. Kelly said Kizer and Zaire are two of the team's five best playmakers, and said he doesn't have a plan for how things will shake out at that position heading into Notre Dame's home opener Sept. 10 against Nevada.

But for now, the plan will be for each quarterback to get snaps in Austin.

"We’re best prepared to beat Texas by playing both DeShone and Malik," Kelly said.
