Notre Dame center Nick Martin tore his MCL Saturday against BYU and will miss six months, coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday.

Kelly previously said Martin had a "significant" knee injury and would miss at least the rest of the season. Martin will miss spring practice but should be ready to go for fall camp next August.

Junior Conor Hanratty will back up newly-minted starter Matt Hegarty at center, while sophomore Mark Harrell will slide in as Notre Dame's No. 3 center. Hanratty has started two games this season -- Oct. 26 at Air Force in relief of Chris Watt at left guard, and against BYU at right guard.
