Notre Dame defensive end Jhonny Williams transferring

Rising sophomore defensive end/edge rusher Jhonny Williams will transfer from Notre Dame, as the Benton Harbor, Mich. native announced his decision on Facebook.

“Friends, family, loved ones, I will be transferring from the university of Notre Dame to pursue a football/academic career elsewhere, thank you for your support,” Williams wrote.

A three-star member or Notre Dame's 2014 recruiting class, Williams redshirted last fall. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Williams spent his first season on campus with the Irish scout team.

Williams is the fourth player to leave Notre Dame since the end of the 2014 season. Offensive lineman Matt Hegarty and quarterback Everett Golson both left as graduate transfers, while incoming freshman outside linebacker Bo Wallace announced in May he wouldn't attend Notre Dame and wound up heading to Arizona State.

With Williams' departure, Notre Dame still has 86 players on scholarship -- one over the NCAA limit. That total doesn't include defensive end Ishaq Williams, who returned to campus this month but isn't guaranteed to be a part of the team this fall. Notre Dame has to be at or under 85 scholarship players when it kicks off the 2015 season Sept. 5 against Texas.
