Ballots for the AP preseason top 25 poll were due before Friday's bombshell announcement of an investigation into potential academic dishonesty at Notre Dame that has implicated four members of the football team.
With that in mind, Notre Dame ranked No. 17 in the AP preseason poll released Sunday afternoon. The Irish received 445 points, sandwiching them between No. 16 Clemson and No. 18 Ole Miss. The AP's Ralph Russo tweeted there was no consideration to re-voting after news of Notre Dame's investigation broke:
@BenKercheval Yes, and because of the uncertainty of that situation and how late in the game we were, no thought to re-opening polls.— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) August 17, 2014
Five Irish opponents were ranked in the top 25: No. 1 Florida State, No. 11 Stanford, No. 15 USC, No. 19 Arizona State and No. 23 North Carolina. Notre Dame plays Florida State, USC and Arizona State on the road this fall. Florida State received 57 of 60 first-place votes.
Notre Dame began the 2013 season ranked No. 14 and began the 2011 season ranked No. 16 in the AP preseason poll. Brian Kelly's squad went unranked in the 2012 preseason poll -- the year the Irish made the BCS Championship.
The AP poll, as well as the coaches poll, take far less precedence this fall given the College Football Playoff selection committee will release weekly top 25 rankings beginning Tuesday, Oct. 28. Notre Dame ranked No. 17 in the preseason coaches poll released July 31.
Eight of the SEC's 14 teams are ranked in the preseason top 25, while the Pac-12 has six ranked teams, the Big Ten has four and the ACC and Big 12 have three.
