The coaches poll no longer factors in college football's championship equation, but it still exists -- and has Notre Dame ranked in its top 20.
The Amway Coaches Poll released its preseason rankings on Thursday, with Notre Dame receiving 509 points and slotting in at No. 17. Notre Dame was ranked No. 24 in the final coaches poll of 2013.
Five Irish opponents rank in the coaches' top 25: No. 1 Florida State, No. 11 Stanford, No. 15 USC, No. 18 Arizona State and No. 23 North Carolina. Three more opponents received votes: Michigan (53 votes, No. 32), Louisville (32 votes, No. 36) and Northwestern (five votes, No. 45).
Unsurprisingly, the SEC had three teams ranked in the top 10 (No. 2 Alabama, No. 5 Auburn, No. 9 South Carolina) and seven teams overall (No. 12 Georgia, No. 13 LSU, No. 19 Ole Miss, No. 20 Texas A&M). The Pac-12 was second with six teams (No. 4 Oregon, No. 7 UCLA, No. 11 Stanford, No. 15 USC, No. 18 Arizona State, No. 25 Washington) while the Big Ten and Big 12 have four teams (No. 6 Ohio State, No. 8 Michigan State, No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 22 Nebraska/No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 10 Baylor, No. 21 Kansas State, No. 24 Texas)) and ACC has three teams (No. 1 Florida State, No. 16 Clemson, No. 23 North Carolina).
