Notre Dame is ditching natural grass at its football stadium for FieldTurf for this coming season, but they're giving nostalgic fans a chance to buy a piece of the old turf -- if they're willing to spend about $150.
A 5x2 piece of Notre Dame Stadium's 2013 grass turf can be purchased for $149.95 on Notre Dame's website, with the school selling pieces of turf that have had the "least amount of wear" from last season. Large swaths of the grass at Notre Dame Stadium wound up in pretty bad shape last year, with instances of players slipping on dead/dying grass becoming more and more common as the season went on.
"Over the years, fans have have expressed feelings about the sentimental value the grass in Notre Dame Stadium holds for them," reads an explanation on UND.com. "This is an opportunity for those who so choose to fulfill their desire to own Notre Dame Stadium grass."
A section of Notre Dame's fanbase hoped to keep natural grass at Notre Dame Stadium, though coaches and players sounded awfully pleased to get artificial turf installed when the decision was announced during April's Blue-Gold game.
"We want some safety issues to be not part of the equation," coach Brian Kelly said. "And look, I think everybody is in agreement -- if we can get the best surface there and grass, we'd love to have that. We just haven't been able to get to that."
