NEW YORK -- Running back George Atkinson was suspended from Saturday's Pinstripe Bowl for a violation of team rules, Notre Dame announced prior to the game.

The junior running back sent the following tweet out Saturday morning: "For those of you who are wondering I was suspended from today's game for texting friends and family during team meal, as i did all season." The tweet was quickly deleted.

After the game, coach Brian Kelly said he hasn't made a decision about Atkinson's future -- though there may not be a decision for him to make. Earlier this month, Kelly said Atkinson submitted paperwork to be evaluated for the 2014 NFL Draft, and while that doesn't mean he'll definitely turn pro it would appear to be an option on the table.

Atkinson never took hold of Notre Dame's No. 1 running back role, despite being the most experienced player vying for time at the position. He's only had two games with double-digit carries, and over the last few weeks has lost touches to freshman Tarean Folston, who will start today's Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers.

On the season, Atkinson has 93 carries for 555 yards and seven touchdowns.

Junior cornerback Jalen Brown was also suspended for the Pinstripe Bowl for a violation of team rules.
