Tommy Rees will try to continue his football career in the nation's capital.
The former Notre Dame quarterback tweeted Saturday he'd signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent, where he'll try to crack a depth chart featuring three players with NFL starting experience: Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy.
Thanks to everyone has been in my corner, excited to say I'll be heading to the Washington Redskins.— Tommy Rees (@t_rees11) May 11, 2014
Rees has said all along he'd try to pursue a playing career. While he's a brilliant quarterback, he's lacking in arm strength and mobility and that could make his road to a roster spot in the NFL difficult.
He's admitted, though, that coaching is likely in his future -- and Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said after the Pinstripe Bowl he'd like to have him back.
"He'll keep trying to play the game as long as he can," Kelly said. "But I told him he's got a bright future as a graduate assistant for Brian Kelly anytime."
