OLYMPIA FIELDS — Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly should get a good indication of whether or not Jarrett Grace can return for the 2014 season following two surgeries on a broken leg suffered last October against Arizona State.
Kelly initially said in March he'd know Grace's status by mid-May, then said last week a decision would be made on the rising senior linebacker's status in late June. Speaking to media Thursday at the Irish Legends Fundraiser at Olympia Fields Country Club, Kelly said he's scheduled to meet with head athletic trainer Rob Hunt on May 22 for an update on Grace's condition.
"I won't know until Thursday of next week, and then I'll get a full evaluation of everybody, and then we'll go from there," Kelly said. "We'll know pretty quickly where he is."
Grace's father told CSNChicago.com last week his son had X-rays taken on his leg and everything was healing well. Kelly said Thursday there wasn't a setback in Grace's recovery and that the linebacker's bones are healing well after having a rod inserted into his leg in late March.
"We're hopeful," Kelly said. "We'll just have to wait and see."
Other sick bay updates:
— Safety Nicky Baratti dislocated his shoulder in Notre Dame's Blue-Gold game last month, but it wasn't serious enough to require surgery. Kelly said Baratti will play the 2014 season with a harness, which former cornerback Bennett Jackson played with as he dealt with shoulder issues throughout his career at Notre Dame.
— Center Nick Martin will get "a ton of work" this summer, Kelly said, as he gets back up to speed following a torn MCL that kept him out of spring practice. His return will push Matt Hegarty, who played center in Martin's absence last season and this spring, to guard.
— Linebacker Ben Councell, who tore his ACL in early November of 2013, will get work in this summer and fall as both an inside and outside linebacker. Kelly, though, said defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder is primarily looking at Councell as an outside linebacker.
