Notre Dame's Everett Golson is among the 39 quarterbacks selected for the Davey O'Brien Award watch list, though he has some stiff competition.
Five of last year's semifinalists for the honor are on the 2014 watch list: UCLA's Brett Hundley, Oregon State's Sean Mannion, Oregon's Marcus Mariota, Ohio State's Braxton Miller and Florida State's Jameis Winston. Meanwhile, Golson didn't play last year after being exiled from campus following the 2013 spring semester.
But Golson's name has popped up in the Heisman Trophy discussion, albeit behind preseason favorites like Miller and Winston.
In 2012, Golson completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 2,405 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions as Notre Dame went undefeated in the regular season and lost to Alabama in the BCS Championship.
Notre Dame will face six quarterbacks also on the preseason watch list this fall: Winston, Michigan's Devin Gardner, Stanford's Kevin Hogan, Navy's Kennan Reynolds, Arizona State's Taylor Kelly and USC's Cody Kessler.
