NEW YORK — Notre Dame's next defensive coordinator will be Jets linebackers coach Brian VanGorder, according to multiple reports.
VanGorder previously served as the defensive coordinator at Georgia (2001-2004) and Auburn (2012), as well as with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons (2008-2011). He coached with Brian Kelly at D-II side Grand Valley State from 1989-1991 and played with Notre Dame strength and conditioning coach Paul Longo at Wayne State.
VanGorder won the 2003 Broyles Award -- given annually to college football's best assistant, and won by former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco in 2012 -- and has extensive experience coaching linebackers, so he's a natural fit to slide in as that position's coach at Notre Dame.
Kelly said Saturday that he had agreed to hire someone as his defensive coordinator, but couldn't go public with it because the contract was still being finalized.
