Notre Dame offensive lineman Christian Lombard is out for the rest of the season after undergoing back surgery, coach Brian Kelly told members of the media Thursday.

In Lombard's place, freshman Steve Elmer will start at right guard. The former four-star recruit came to Notre Dame as a tackle, but coaches have raved about his versatility to play any position along the offensive line except center.

Nose guard Louis Nix will not travel to Colorado Springs for Saturday's game against Air Force, as he's dealt with knee and shoulder injuries this week. Losing him could be a blow for Notre Dame, but holding him out against a team that would've consistently cut blocked him may be better in the long run.

"Option football is not his cup of tea," Kelly said Tuesday.

Safety Elijah Shumate (hamstring) will travel to Air Force but won't start, with Kelly saying he could help the Irish in an emergency situation.

Lastly, quarterback Tommy Rees -- as expected -- is set to play Saturday after taking all of the first-team reps in practice Thursday.
