Teen dies after being shot following high school basketball game

Updated: 9:23 a.m.A 17-year-oldboyis dead after being shotoutside the Jones Convocation Center at Chicago State University following a high school basketball game Wednesday night.

Officials from both the Chicago Police and the University confirmed to CSNChicago.com that the shooting occurred ina parking lotshortly after 9p.m. on Chicagos South Side. Later, an ambulance with its lights and sirens on was seen speeding away from the location of the crime, near the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and 95th Street.

The Tribune reports that the victim, Tyrone Lawson,was inserious condition at the time hewas taken from the scene, butwas laterpronounced dead at Advocate Christ MedicalCenter. Lawson was an honor student at Morgan Park and just six weeks from his 18th birthday.Chicago State University released a statementon the situationearly Thursday morning."Chicago State University is deeply saddened by the tragic shooting death that
followed a Chicago Public Schools (CPS) basketball game held on campus," the statement said."This is the first such incident to occur on the campus of Chicago State University where CPS students have played many times over the last three years. Additional security is provided by the University and all external partners during high school sporting events."A Jeep was also pulled over on the east side of the University and two individuals were taken into custodyafter police found a gun inside the vehicle, according to The Tribune."Arrests have been made and University officials are awaiting the outcome of afull investigation to learn details about the shooting incident," the Chicago State University statement said.

Prior to the shooting, Simeon Career Academy defeated rival Morgan Park High School 53-51 in a Chicago Public League game. The game was clean throughout, but there was a minor verbal and physical altercation as the two teams were shaking hands afterwards. Security quickly took control of the situation and the two teams left the court and returned to their locker rooms.

It wasnt until severalminutes later when both teams were notified of the shots fired outside the complex that they remained behind locked doors for an extended period as the building was put in a lockdown mode.

This isnt the first time there has been a conflict surrounding a Morgan Park-Simeon sporting event. A football game at Gately Stadium between the two schools on Sept. 7, 2012 was cancelled in the third quarter after fans fled the east bleachers after someone was stabbed.

Some fans leaving the stadium claimed that gunshots were fired, which led to police arrivingto the scene, but nothing more than a fight and stabbing was confirmed.
