New Western Michigan head coach Tim Lester has a long history and connections to the Chicagoland area.

Lester and the Broncos made a nice early recruiting splash Thursday and added two verbal commitment from De LaSalle junior outside linebacker Joe Bonds (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) and Lakes Community outside linebacker Ryan Selig (6-foot-2, 210 pounds)..

"Western Michigan is just a great fit for me," Bonds said. "Coach Lester is a great coach who is very ambitious and a man who will lead the program to championships."

Bonds, a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, also discussed why he made such an early verbal commitment.

"I knew that they (Western Michigan) landed a verbal commitment earlier tonight from another Chicagoland linebacker (Ryan Selig) and I didn't want to miss out on such a great opportunity. Western Michigan was already a top choice for me and I've already bought totally into the school, so I was ready to commit."

Bonds and Selig are the first two known Illinois verbal commitments for the Western Michigan 2018 class.
