The Northern Illinois University Huskies and head coach Rod Carey added a very nice last-minute recruiting piece from the Class of 2013 as Glenbard West three-star defensive lineman Ruben Dunbar qualified and is in DeKalb.
"We are very proud of Ruben," Glenbard West head coach Chad Hetlett said on Tuesday. "He was able to qualify and is at NIU right now and on the team. He was able to really buckle down the last year or so and take care of his academics. He's another example of a player using football as a gateway to bigger and better things."
Hetlett talked about the type of player they are getting in Dunbar.
"Ruben is a 6-foot-3, 265 pound freak of nature. He hasn't even begun to scratch the surface of just how good of a player he can be at the college level," he said. "He has all of the tools you're looking for in a defensive linemen. He's a very quiet and shy personality, yet once he hits the field he's a totally different kid. He's also an intelligent kid and people need to realize that he needed to makeup some poor grades early on in his high school career. He understood his situation, didn't back away from it and went to work."
Dunbar will be a greyshirt recruit this fall for the NIU Huskies, meaning he will be on the roster and practice with the team but won't play in any games in 2013. Dunbar will be added on scholarship in the spring and his scholarship will count towards the Huskies Class of 2014 recruiting class.
Dunbar had early scholarship offers from Arizona State, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, NIU, North Carolina State, Oklahoma State and Toledo.
