CSNChicago.com is your top destination on the road to the 2014 high school football season. CSN preps contributor “Edgy” Tim O’Halloran spotlights one team per day in the CSN Preps Power Rankings, counting down to kickoff on August 29.
2013 record: 5-5 (4-2); placed third in the always-tough West Suburban Silver in 2013. Lost to Simeon 20-16 in Class 8A opening round action.
The Lions welcome back 11 starters, including a large majority of their starting offensive skills group from a season ago. If the Lions can let their offense set the tone, this team has the potential to be a strong state playoff caliber team in 2014.
Areas of concern: Lyons Township will need to break in four new starters in the defensive secondary, something that will give head coach Kurt Weinberg and any high school head coach a few uneasy nights of sleep leading up to kickoff.
It will be a good season if ... the Lions can have a winning record heading into West Suburban Silver conference play. Lyons Township over the past three seasons have started with records of 1-3 (2013), 2-4 (2012) and 2-3 (2011) before making a late run to make the state playoff field.
Headliners: The Lions have several names to watch, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Senior running back Leonard Ross (5-foot-11, 195 pounds) just gave Miami of Ohio his verbal; commitment. Also senior lefty QB Tom Fielder (6-foot-2, 176 pounds) will be a three-year starter for the Lions this fall.
Biggest game: Every game in the West Suburban Silver is huge, yet for me, the opening week game at Warren is a definite game to watch. If Lyons Township can beat a very good Blue Devils team, that could be the early boost to carry this team the rest of the regular season.
