Despite traveling on the road and facing the No. 1 team in the area with a new head coach and a new quarterback, Hinsdale Central came back from a halftime deficit to knock off Bolingbrook 23-15 on Friday night.
Red Devils senior quarterback Matt Rafferty, playing in his first varsity football game after focusing on his Division I aspirations in basketball, was 9-for-16 for 167 yards and two touchdown passes to lead Hinsdale Central (1-0). Rafferty completed a 74-yard TD pass to Thomas Ives and also added a 44-yard touchdown strike to Ryan Doney. The 6-foot-7 Rafferty was the quarterback of the sophomore football team but he helped lead Hinsdale Central into the CSN Preps Power Rankings last season in basketball as the team's starting power forward during his junior season.
The Raiders (0-1) had a chance in the fourth quarter as they drove to Hinsdale Central's 23-yard line with 5:24 left, but Julian Huff’s run went for no gain as Bolingbrook turned the ball over on downs.
Bolingbrook will look to bounce back against Romeoville in Week 2 while Hinsdale Central travels to Addison Trail for another road game.
