On Oct. 4, Lane Tech wing back and team captain Drew Williams collapsed on the sideline. He was admitted to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he remains in critical condition, suffering from bleeding on the surface of his brain.
One week later, his teammates dressed up for their final home game of the year against Foreman. Moments before taking the field on senior night, the players were given the encouraging news that Williams had taken his first breath without the assistance of a ventilator since his injury occurred. Just days prior, they had been dealt the devastating news that their friend and teammate might not survive his injury.
Williams' parents and sister attended the game in his honor and walked with his brother, Bryce, who also plays on the football team.
The players took the field and found the stands full of emotional fans and supporters, many of whom wore T-shirts bearing Williams' name and jersey number and one of his favorite sayings, "Let's eat." And eat they did. Inspired by the recent progress of their fallen teammate, Lane Tech opened the game with an offensive outburst and built a lead that would not be trumped. Lane honored their captain by winning, 52-14.
