Addison native Alexa Scimeca has overcome amazing odds. After defeating an illness that doctors thought would leave her deaf and unable to skate again, she proved them wrong.

Now, she is one of the best pair skaters in the world.

Scimeca's path to Sochi is not going to be easy. She was sidelined by a foot injury earlier in the year and now her partner Chris Knierim is rehabbing a broken ankle. The couple has been training intensely in preparation for Nationals, which is their gateway to the Olympics.

Be sure to catch "Quest for Gold 2014," a 30-minute special highlighting gold-medal hopefuls heading to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, airing at 7 p.m. on Dec. 25 on Comcast SportsNet.
