Cubs manager David Ross celebrates first win with family, a lot of texts

David Ross’ first win as a big league manager is in the books. While he realizes Friday’s 3-0 win over Milwaukee counts for one game in the standings, the Cubs first-year manager will cherish it forever.

“I hadn’t gotten that many text messages since Game 7 of the World Series, there's no doubt about that,” Ross told reporters on Saturday. “I think I'm in the upwards of 150 now, trying to get back some people. It was cool for me.”

Ross’ first win comes under unique circumstances due to COVID-19 but congratulations are in order for the 43-year-old. In addition to those texts, Ross said Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner gave him Friday’s game ball, bench coach Andy Green secured the lineup card, and friend and Cubs pitcher Jon Lester left a gift for him in his office on Saturday.

The biggest reward for Ross was getting home and celebrating with his kids and parents, he said. His family was down when the Cubs lost two exhibitions to the White Sox this week, though he assured them things were OK.

"I think probably just the reward getting home and the kids — there’s a lot of stress coupled with anxiousness and just a lot going on leading up to yesterday, and then getting home and my mom and dad and all my kids being there, that’s super rewarding," he said. “My kids made me a nice little sign, which was neat, was sitting taped to the door when I walked in."
