Transcript
Mike you and I talked earlier you are a huge fan of John growth and feel he would be an excellent hire. We here in Chicago. Don't know John -- very well we look at the way the process has played out. And look at that as just a ridiculous. Way that they have moved the pieces around what's your take -- process V. I'm John -- It costs arm is much less. Convoluted or horror or messed up then that you guys are portraying. I'll I obviously we all know the -- with a one armed. Exactly how involved they -- with some of the other guys. And I'll really. You know I mean I think it. As you're in if you if you put outfielder Anthony -- I mean you're not getting and so you could do it because you -- True or Q what -- you -- -- that you're not getting it so I don't -- that convert any problems you -- -- up with the best guy on the market it -- did get close. The best guy for the job. You respect even even including the people that you talk about it and has been number one candidate sure you're lining up with the best guy for the job and and I I I compared it to the Illinois Arizona Angels five. Illinois played terrible basketball I understand for 35 minutes. They play great for -- And they weren't a final four and now they're still a legendary team because. It doesn't matter of people at about 35 minutes what mattered and it. They Cotter of the past and -- Albert. And their final fourteen and if you wind up with John Groce. You've got but -- Scott preacher -- it doesn't matter I got here. Mike is Brian Hamilton from the trip -- wanna take a step back. You look at -- Not why in this job you look at Brad Stevens not why this job regardless of whether you even had a legitimate shot at either one of those guys. How much has the landscape changed where guys like a -- Smart and a Brad Stevens say you know what. I'm pretty comfortable where I am making decent amount of money where I am I don't wanna deal with unrealistic expectations how much in general do you think. The landscape has changed college basketball coaches thinking about taking that -- Think it has less to do it unrealistic expectations a couple of personal data instantly when you -- that guy and you got hot. To let -- take the first big money job came along because you were making a hole I mean obviously it's not bad might make a couple hundred grand. -- -- if you didn't know how long -- -- -- -- before he turned -- you. So yeah it's already came along RPG a 1000000000002. Or whatever -- bet that we're talking a while ago -- It took it didn't matter whether you are not an error all you can say he's the U or Butler and makes seven figures. While you wait for something that is right for you. In the kicker -- gross. -- -- right for hill he has recruited at the highest level. You know in the midwest in the nation he recruited Greg Oden he recruited Mike Conley recruit DeShaun Thomas. He knows how to get those kinds of things aren't. When you look at that shock shock -- great I think he's tremendous. He wasn't at Florida alone and not any eight and -- from a from a midwest or pinpointing what went in the midwest into the Florida with the club sent. So what they're in the big and he didn't you look at Illinois and Indiana and Michigan. He dealt with a somewhat Illinois he recruited even -- he couldn't get it -- More or Oliver couldn't get done whoever didn't close on that. And NA NA mostly recruited Al so I try to get a look at what -- guys and we'll I'll. And that's what we're talking about with strokes. They might as David -- from WSCR radio if you talk to ten people. Half of them also a Illinois a top fifteen to twenty program the other five will say you're crazy. Where do you put Illinois on the spectrum of college basketball jobs. I'd say somewhere in today in the in the fifteen to twenty area that would be where -- I would put it. Great and -- tremendous fan base. Armed they have a practice facility. I know it's a little older than some of the others but it still. -- a workable and it they wanted to dress up a little bit more open to a gift or -- to do that. Obviously assembly hall I'd need a little. To China but it skate on game night could still electric extol the best place is. In America. The play a home game. I think at -- with the -- in the building but I think building will come along so I. I think it's a great shot and obviously it got regional power it's not just Chicago DePaul put also the suburbs also downstate. They're good players from all those place. Mike is David -- you know I like your analogy. To the Arizona Illinois game in 2005 for the search. At the same time I think I've used the word clumsy to describe the search process because I do think there has been a perception created. That it might you know be of concern to some candidates if if they are indeed. You know candidates and I saw what I ask you this you describe growth says obviously the -- of the hottest coach on the market I don't dispute that. But if you are that guy would have -- in the future now in light of what happened today with the board of trustees getting involved reportedly. And I think -- really half. It cured if you're John -- do you want this job. Well I I think it depends on what certainty that had happened -- yell at their pension reports that. That that's not you know that day from Illinois apparently denying that I don't know whether it's true or not. You certainly don't want that kind of interference and it -- half. Happens it'll get it does happen and it can't stop it from happening and you had John -- will walk away and mom I'm just as well off not being there but. If indeed that's not true and they closed the deal and he'd become the next coach he's going to be very successful there he's a terrific. Talent and it's not just my opinion I talked to work another major coach today than it doesn't have any familial relationship. With John who thinks he's. So I. I know what his background is I know he's been successful everywhere he's been I know that he can get into. The recruiting races and win them. I he's done it and I know we can scout because he found DJ Cooper any problem right there in Chicago. My last one before we let you go all what would you say. To the high school coaches in the Chicago area some in the inner city who have said on the record. He's not one of -- we don't know -- has nothing to do this -- -- he's never committed dealt with us here we don't. Really take well to outsiders which could affect. Recruiting three major players that are coming through and clip Alexander -- -- Okafor the number one player in Jabari Parker what would you say to those coaches because perception does become reality and it truly it becomes a stumbling block is recruiting that defeats the purpose and hiring. Well I don't know about Chicago necessarily in the high school but I know that most well in most places in the country that -- you coach and have a lot of influence. And accelerate if they wanna cut him out -- I think he could maybe find a way around them. And still get he'll get the players -- There's plenty of players in the various hate -- program in Chicago. And I you know I know that says that a lot of people have gotten a lot of great player out of those programs. Including RI OC not John necessarily specifically but -- -- -- Evan Turner out of that. Region I and -- this and I I know that. You know that they watched them play you and Al I'm sure that was -- factor in in his recruitment so. If they want to cut it about you know what -- play my cut them out I I don't know that's for sure our streak of one or a majority very genial person. I can't say that probably they would find that they like him and he's a terrific basketball coach and had a player's best interest of arc. And I don't know what you already put one -- it's.
