Illini Talk on CTL
Transcript
This school is a victim of outsized expectations. I know Mike you said this is a fifteen to twenty range job back matters they have to outright Big Ten titles in the last 32 years. It's not an elite job yeah I think. There is a large faction of Illinois fans and observers who believe it to be elite job and hold two championship elite eight final four expectations. That's going to scare guys off. I I have to believe that there were more realistic expectations foisted on this program. That may be Shaka Smart is the head coach in Illinois right now but he's he doesn't look back and say you know what. Instead of taking the risk of me getting fired five or six years now because I don't make an elite eight. A mistake VCU rich and make a million dollars a year may be as determined we're not get fired. But he didn't so and neither did any other coaches that you may have approach remain out of approach whatever you wanted to believe through third parties so right now after Mike Thomas and your -- or you you've got. One priority. Get this done. Deny everything. You say this has been number one dial long. You introduce him as the as the next great skill guy out there got you you make it happen because you're too far down the road to let this does all. You cannot let board of trustees it. -- this you can't let the media ruin this. Your might Thomas you make this happen you introduce him with a smile and you bout everything is gonna be all right I don't. Think actually I don't. Necessarily think it would be a bad thing if John gross stood up there. And one of us asked the question how does it feel to be Illinois. Second or third choice Shaka Smart turn this down Brad Stevens turned us down here John -- you can send out there I -- I have all the respect in the world for those guys they're fantastic basketball coaches. It's their loss I think I have one of the best jobs in America and I think that gets you over with Illinois fans big time and I think he can and then you can honestly address the situation. And not look at trying to pull water bodies are totally. Agree -- Brian I mean well go up there and -- admit the truth I mean I might not have been the first choice but I am so happy to be here and I'm gonna make this a great thing you know for now and down the road. But I still go back to what's going on with Mike Thomas. You know he was. I don't remember who hired and what president hired him at this juncture since there's been so many over the recent past -- where does he stand I mean he's he's got problems what the -- he's got problems with a rod whatever president there is. I give the guy the benefit of the doubt he's a new sheriff in town he's allowed to hire what coaches he wants but it's been so bungled. In both the football and now the basketball process where does he stand both near and far turn away. -- he's had a job since August so I don't think that they really can do anything but ride this out. That's I mean you're you have to wait you alternatives and at this point what is the alternative to -- the John Groce pursuits fail. You're on your alternative to starting over you cannot afford start over on March 27 or whatever it is to with the coaching search.
