Transcript

They can't it's from Simeon head coach Robert Smith who's won. Five Illinois championships and their star player Jabari Parker guys could have both here first of all congratulations. Five state titles and eight years as the head coach. He's just fumble. The ball thrown in thanks. It's incredible. Never thrown happens such a short time book you know. We've been working hard since I first got to and and as a result that we came -- Jamar what's it like playing for coach and playing at a program where. You guys have a target on your back every time you go play because you are Simeon because you're so good what's that like. I was very -- Trent Cole Smith along with because -- -- because everybody gets along. Your family off the court and on -- course of -- -- to see so much. Do you feel any of the pressure because. You guys are so good that everybody wants to be is there -- pressure to that. There's always pressure because so we never know what teams who may give us their a game and he did. The week. We just need to come out there every day and just so perfect. Illinois hires a new coach today John Groce is the new guy. There's been much made about. He -- no ties to Chicago or the publicly stuff to recruit and I almost on the defensive because I've been around so long. It's about developing relationships isn't that the key recruiting in Chicago through your staff that. All throughout the country. You have to make sure you come in and do those relationships. With the proper people and I don't know him personally book. I'm pretty sure he can come in due to do those things and he just may soon come and meet the right people when you go about the right way on a stage where it destinies are changing fast. When you then if he knocks on your door -- -- time the new coach Illinois you always had an open door policy. You would welcome him into your school and allow him to work for your kids correct yeah definitely I would love to get to meet him and just understand his philosophy in. What he's trying to take Illinois and we trying to get him to be. I'm up for you -- been on your list for Bruce Weber. Has had a relationship with you only if you -- family for a long time would you still consider Illinois even though he's not there. Of course because that's one of the stakes are from a -- on his songs is glad for us. They're sitting alone in a state school system recruit me. Is to coax the most important is it. Being able to get to the NBA the most important is it being able to win a title what's the number one thing on your mind when you look at a college. Andre Immelman -- with a coach because from there a computer relationship and then are we cannot go two sets and trying to fit -- system. Further this being the most this. So you're looking for someone you can look up to he may be tough -- -- but somebody. You feel like like you have with rob somebody that can coach you and reach you know. There's of course because from there. Wouldn't be as it's hard as the season goes on. What's it like coaching this young man because tell wise it's unbelievably also plays very hard whereas this far. You know are his knowledge of the game is is so paso. For me I have to be home run game every day from him because he's Watson and he understands we're going home on the floor. Knowing that's one good thing mellow about it was that he understands the game no soreness -- -- Still to be changed and maybe on one side he can come over us remember we need to do this. We'll want to take a look at this the corners and our respective because I understand what type of please. When someone comes into recruit and -- and they sit down whether -- Buzz Williams who signed Steve Taylor the new guy Gelman no lawyer Oliver Purnell. What's the key to being a good recruiter. Person -- there's really good relationships -- -- -- we understand. That the student athlete is going to be comfortable with. -- know that they don't take him you know kansans who don't watch over them because you become apparent. From that there's guys who went eighteen and nineteen Aniston which is stood up here. And the parents have to understand and realize that this is someone who will take care much. I mean no thought no matter how far away from home it is because it will be away from home. Right you've got dad who played the NBA. Your mom is very much as your dad is focused on education. But you're also an unbelievably talented basketball player so. Tell me most important things to you as you go forward -- it being an NBA players -- getting his college degree what's in your mind. I'm just -- educated first because of student athletes. Are -- student before athlete. And do you go to school because you get that that -- just to get an education so I looked at as the number one priority and basketball follows after that and what is your timetable this. Coach guy you and say you know trying to get something done in November get the pressure off for. -- coach whoever is around it was different he want guys to wait all the way till April things have changed a little bit now it. That says a lot and know on. His family has done a great job with them and and controlling the recruitment. I'm just a little part in that. I don't -- -- -- questions -- questions -- what do they care is one thing that we do have we have a great circle with myself and -- and his parents. I understand and everybody that coaches and people around industries and Jason and they too so that's why I think it's been going so well so I know sometime in April. You may lose today I don't know as a team and say you know what we think is the best time for him -- Make his decision there were no schools and things of that nature. Because at the end of the day -- about euphoria when he wants to do because I don't have to be dad his parents don't have to do to me he's the person with the leader so. We have to stay together and they should he's had to what we do. -- if the phone rings you walk out of our studio your cell phone rings and it's John -- nieces. I'd like to sit and talk to you about -- -- here -- right for me recruiting your kids you are willing to listen to him -- to develop a relationship with. Of course you know or whichever way whichever angle because it is so now -- -- severe assistant coach or. So -- him about just talk about the kids that's in our program of doing that relationship I don't have a problem at all because of the candidates for the student athletes is not about me. You know while I've been successful. In about status and I love women. You know it is great for me you know -- great food for Illinois right now to me the hardest thing that's been able -- yes. This and -- -- no one in the nation is. Was images represent the state you know all the way to the -- listen to the one mistake we most horrible you know we finished up no more. Because like 45 in the country so. -- mean stand in this amount is my heart and made that we're gonna be one of the hardest things that I want have to do what had to leave we'll make that decision to -- And when you make your decision you don't wanna big show like LeBron like the decision is nice and quiet with the family with coach. This kind of play of course you don't have the media Coen film making a big do. Could you Jabari Parker we will have be right back here you make a right on TV it's. Congratulations again all the success because were on -- for the program there are things you are rob Smith Jabari Parker.
