David Kaplan and the CTL panel discuss Brian Urlacher's ailing left knee and what it means for the Bears season - 8/22
Transcript
So Brian Urlacher has that procedure done as moon -- broke last week multiple other procedures and he had surgery last week arthroscopic it may have been but. Would throw a multiple things done to an ailing knee this cannot be good going into an NFL season. No it can't be good but I agree with John that I think the fact he's gone and done this is a plot so I I talked Alex Rodriguez for a long time one day this spring about it. And hey rod and Kobe Bryant was a guy's got a ride ago. And if you know Kobe Bryant unbelievable year this year. Alex Rodriguez hasn't had an unbelievable year but his knee has been fine you know he got hit by pitch broke his hand he's had other issues but. You know I think he feels good I saw the noise that US cellular he looks good and I don't really don't hold out that he's not gonna return and finish strong I sort of believe in the science I don't know. I you don't have to go to Germany to do it. There are other people that could do it you -- a -- if I understood him correctly told me could've gotten it done in the US but doctor -- doing and that's been. I forget exactly where he said it is in Germany but he he said. It's the best place so I mean it's not like this -- a witch doctor Ian and nobody else does this stuff it's just that. He's considered the leader and guys go there and do it because the result. I am -- more more skeptical about it is about this being. This whole process -- a good thing for the opener I'd buy a piece I'd be surprised if he's out there. For week one I just did everything he can keep hearing the day it's getting better it's getting better and then all the stuff that's coming out he's getting all these procedures done. Nothing seems to be working. I'm more skeptical at this point. I don't know Heidi camped to with the way that the Bears have sort of handled this and keep. Kind of telling you things and then somebody else comes out that's not what they told you so you know you have to wonder how bad. This truly is and I mean you look at the numbers I know it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the Bears defense can be worse without Brian Urlacher but it is. Considerably worse when he's not on the field mean. The last time he was significantly -- 2009. And they gave up the most points they've given up since he's been on the Bears and he was 375. The other year where he missed I think. What six games seven game until -- you know four and they had a point differential of minus a hundred summing the numbers obviously they're out there when he's done on the field. -- -- issues and furthermore. We keep going in the last couple years talking about well the Bears defense is starting get up there and age at what point. Do these core players on their defense start to get hurt or break down and then all of a sudden this defense isn't so good. Maybe this is the beginning of that. With Brian Urlacher now seemingly having all these need to problems -- the other thing is you can't go into the season having not played at all having not practiced. Funny thing and expecting he's going to be. Brian Urlacher against the Colts September ninth as he proclaims. It's going to be a big problem it's a huge question because he's such a key to what they do defensively. He needs his speed that covered -- this. Be able to drop back and cover the deep middle there's just a lot of things he's the defense a single car he's the heart and soul not only the defense for probably the locker room. There is just so much he does if he's not there to gaping hole that the -- Things that they do have going for didn't have affect the those other stretches as Julius Peppers. I'm glad they feel radically. You know they're here can be a little bit less of a load on him but the age across the board is a problem no question you know -- start to get Nick Roach is now is now like an old guy in the NFL as quickly as those guys' age so. You have. It's an issue to me the leadership -- this is my biggest concern because if we Anthony Adams on -- maybe two weeks ago and he keep -- kind of said that there might not be that there's. There's nobody to replace that voice in the huddle and -- do what he does for the Bears.
