Transcript
Welcome to the crashes installment of the -- podcasted hall of famers got a bit didn't. In the house seemed nervous about teeing it up next week at the Ryder Cup Brian has Michael Jordan ever privately told Scotty how much he appreciated his game. Later former mayor Tom their checks and we'll get his thoughts on the offensive struggles in three days how the play calling -- -- that unit that -- and that. I'll try to put the rock the latest Cutler -- consolidated -- present a five locked -- -- deal. You may -- hill I feel about them. Played first base. As you look at some of the other things your -- to these days ambassador with the Bulls we see you courtside all the time. You're you can keep them pretty busy here the last two years has that been something that you've enjoyed you know. Being a businessman. Given back to the community still working with the Bulls. Gases is this not a great I guess the last 23 years slump back in Chicago and work with the organization. There's been a lot of fun being -- -- on the players than. Just doing things in the community and keep them off base up there. I know. Follow you on Twitter. You know you go through the ups and downs and all these Bulls fans go to we usually see you courtside. -- at the home games. Well what what's that been like the social media aspect that was the that was a par when you when you play the game that did have you enjoyed the interaction with players this current and fans because some times. He can get you trouble list too. JK am I am around not a very good with a lot of you know just doing and now -- -- you know staying in touch with our fans into a slow them though you know things that are going on it's it's it's it's been great. That is something that it's been a lot of fun to be able to just. Continue to stay involved in watching the team play into -- in my assessment from silent here because you're like it a no win situation at certain things like when it comes to the Olympics I mean. You know some of the guys that are currently on the dream team. -- and then obviously you know you know the guys that you played with and there's always that comparison every year and and people wanna get you know your opinion on it. And you're really in a no win situation that. Yeah I mean it's it's always tough on me because he's trying to make the comparison of twenty years of basketball and that's hard to compare because the game has changed the rules have changed -- the players are different. The game is faster. Players -- more physical. You know to make those comparisons sometime very difficult but you know. You have your opinion and that's all you can do is voice -- everybody wants to know what there's gonna be like when he comes back out there is a good sign yesterday in the NFL to see Adrian Peterson. Who had total knee reconstruction and right around Christmas time just after January be out on the field performing at a high level you're Derek in here and either LA are here in Chicago training. That I had to be a positive sign for him knowing that an elite guy can get back to where he wants to be the I'm sure was. And just look at me Derek I mean the trainers there are really doing a tremendous job will really work on women. You know Derek is a go -- he's a guy that's gonna work hard he's determined. You know he's the number one pick in the draft so he did he knows that his expectations are very high and he's a Chicago kid. He wants nothing that's nothing more than the best for the city and he wants to bring a championship here so bad so and I think this this injury will really don't put Derek in the situation that he's going to be the best player that he would have ever been he's going to be stronger. This time has given him. An opportunity just keep his body as solid. As a rock and I think he would definitely -- hail from this entry in a way that we would never have known. But I think you're right because just the work ethic that he has but do you think -- to change his game when he returns -- Kenny take it to the Iraq. -- and -- put his body in harm's way it like he did the first few years of his career. I think he would definitely play the same game I think he will be even better he's gonna have more confidence up. You know well. His injuries Trulli of a major injury in this one of those injuries they can reoccur put. There is such a young player he's so determined if you look at his body's local rock you know in the way that he plays a game. I don't think he's gonna change this off season is gonna give him. A tremendous amount of time to develop his body and even get even stronger than what we've done in the past so. I expect them to change and me expect we're gonna see something that is going to be -- when he hit that. A lot of people think the teams is treading water until he gets healthy until he gets back to two all star safe form. Are like talking to Stacey King a couple weeks ago -- the benchmarks company he actually thinks the additions they made -- have strengthened its bench. What are your thoughts on what needs to be done whether it's Boozer whether it's -- team whether it's -- stepping up in -- absence. -- I think all those players -- Ramirez to step up you know I think Boozer and Joakim has done a very good job in terms of controlling the middle. Defense and lead this team has to be better and continue to do that this was allow them to be Julio the last couple years so. I don't think they're gonna turn them on their defense but offensively. They have to have guys is gonna step up -- contributed nothing Branyan and you know Gallinari. As well as some you know some of all the free agents that they sound like make Robinson is if you're gonna give them an offensive spurt. But most of all you know I think Tom Thibodeau is definitely going to embrace -- have a coach. He's just been on guys this in the you know really took -- ground and you and you talk about successful coach you have to mention Tom Thibodeau and what he has -- in store for this team used -- should be very exciting because. He's had a lot of time to prepare for life would -- Derrick Rose to -- On the phone to account saying well. Was called me like start of the season is -- the type of guy you would like to play for you think -- worked out. Well. I I would love to play if Wellemeyer and I'd like his style the way he's he's determined he's intense. Like -- scotus. But also like those that -- sit back director -- Jackson and commit to do your own thing so. Not to take anything away from a close pivotal iron into Oakland Phil Jackson and he's a great coach put it. -- there goes a different -- -- this generation. I played twenty years ago also. To say that I could play for him today would be a stretch. While the yellow -- and when you look -- that Phil I know road and right now he's trying to get his body. You know in order to go through Simpson surgeries or whatnot and you know he was approached by Orlando. -- do you think she'll be back in the game soon it seems like the last interview I saw I think was on HBO real sports that. It looked like the right fit the right time Phil's gonna come back at least one more time. I think so I mean he's a breath and he has a lot of knowledge and you know -- still young man and there's no the coach of those that's success infielders had and then. The opportunity present itself from I'm sure you'll get back when was the last time we talked to Michael how much do you guys interact. Haven't talked a little while on approach Baltimore Sun news opened up his restaurant here and so that's been a few months ago but. We don't panic too much to save on the golf course to what it. Yeah heat we see on the golf course quite a bit obviously we see him once in awhile you know in the owner's box. At Bobcats games. Do you think this struggles of that franchise. Do you think it bothers them do you think it's something that you know that we know he's the ultimate competitor. Do you think it's it's eating -- little bit. Yeah I mean losing these anybody you know I think that he's at the point where you know you can you want to see you -- going. In a better direction but they're small -- well. Part of the game some ups and downs you know when you're down there's only one way to go. In a lot of people say sometimes that great. Superstars. Don't always make the best coaches -- -- front office people because they knew how they did it. The -- they have to come to the reality of what they have in front of them not everybody. Obviously is built like Michael Jordan or Scottie Pippen or Larry Bird or what have you and that. You know. It doesn't quite mesh. With you know that the top superstar athlete and then -- actual current day athlete did you buy in any of that I don't really buy into it now because you know he's not to play and attitude -- -- obviously Michael don't have the best players in the game only team right now so that's why he's not one of the best teams in the game. We saw him you know in Springfield during the during his induction in -- talked a lot about. You know the past. When you guys are together. We all appreciate what he did for the game I know you appreciate what he did for your career. Does he in quiet times -- you I really appreciate what you did for me. Yeah I think I heard incident at the Olympics there. And you know there and it's all the things he skis and put like what they could behind closed doors every day every day it is is there that. That understanding that. That you really worry and think he's just dead on the standing you know is some words you just don't have to say you -- -- -- -- -- we're gonna see you at the Ryder Cup we are excited some of the promotions. Leading up to the Ryder Cup. You know the best golf players in the world. -- gonna be in great -- going to be very difficult you're playing in the pro -- I mean you're hall of Famer who's been in some pressure filled situations for what's gonna -- life. Teeing it up at the Ryder Cup. The it's going to be tough because I'm not that good of a golfer. I've never played info professional golfers before. Never played in front of fans who forego sports Fella it's going to be a new different boat. I'm hopeful the talent any of the things we should know what to work and and I know as you know people see you on Twitter obviously CS ambassador with the Bulls. Hopefully things hope will be on track I think they're gonna surprise some people before Derek gets back. But does any other things that the that you're working on that we should be looking out for awhile I'll be worked and lived here at home on their familiar recover from my knee surgery as well so -- out of divided over the next few weeks are you get that -- ready to go look forward to seeing at the Ryder Cup and of course BankAmerica and the Chicago marathon and thank you have. -- Two days for Tom there here Comcast sports -- during the Lance -- thanks for joining me in the podcast here first up. When you look back at that Thursday net loss in green that you put a lot on on the coaches to OGI do because I think in order to your team the most confident. There's a psychological. Process that the you have to go through a special with an offer -- are still trying to find themselves. To me I'm a disagreement with throwing the ball on the first play. Because rather than allowing your office of -- this surge off the ball in a powerful position. Is starting gaining control of your opponent they make Emery tree and then they give up a sack to a book -- back who's blocking on linebacker not your second fourteen. They don't realize that one play. From is he has a negative result in the next four plays so to me when you go into a hostile environment. And you want to have a psychological advantage -- you can give your offense line and allow them ferociously approach the first couple plays with the running game it wasn't just that first series that the Bears threw the ball. On first down the entire first. -- so when you take a look at what the offensive line is going to be fixed -- -- overnight I mean jamarcus Webb as long as he's in a -- uniform. Is jamarcus wet so you need to play the strength of that offensive line and we talked about the past. They're an athletic group what are some things you would like to do scheme wise to take advantage of what you have on that line. Well first bobbitt's pass protection make sure they have the built in safety nets -- timely offensive tackles to allow them come out of their stance confidently. If you allow them together stance confidently they're gonna block more confident that's one of the things involved in the passing game. But the running game they have a whole series of plays that they can attack inside and outside you mentioned the athleticism. Of the guards the center of the tackle they can all move. And they can all put people -- space. Now rather than allow Clay Matthews to attack you the first play you attack him the first play. Put at 300 pound offensive linemen on him put Evan Rodriguez who's a pretty decent blocker out of the fullback H back position. In put some of attach abuse to his playing defense rather than being an offensive. Defense of player. As you take a look at the game against the Rams. You know they're the one and one but that they're able to score some points. This is going to be an interest in test for the Bears defense. Steven Jackson a little banged up in their second game but looks like he will play. What kind of problems does does the Rams offense present for for the Bears. Sam rappers are really good quarterback he's intelligent he's accurate he's big. And he can lead this offense when you have one player that catches six or fifteen passes targeted sixteen times like last week. Obviously. You can go back to the same player even though the opponent is trying to take him away from the game but Sam Bradford confidently continually attack with the receiver downfield. But I think the key to the Bears is use the versatility you have on the defense of line to keep them off balance never let Sam Bradford get into a comfort zone. When they evaluate the town in the office and wind they're going to be a defined weakest link in that offensive line. In because the way you can use the versatility of defense -- you can give Peppers more than one -- on the weakest link. You can use Shea McClellan Henry Melton Israel Idonije and all these guys in move them around to make sure that Sam Bradford has a locate. The the solid protection rather than look for his receivers downfield and Danny Amendola was the guy talked about with a fifteen catches last week got. He's Wes Welker -- bright and he's gonna present some interest in challenges for the -- secondary right I think all of the -- have -- to keep their hat on a swivel because they'll move him three times in the course of one played before they get them downfield. And a lot of times the movement is attached to getting a defensive back in an awkward position where they can throw the ball to the receiver. So yes you're gonna have to be able to play intelligently before the snap of the ball but then you're gonna have to stand and efficient position once the ball snapped ever has been talking about the jamarcus Webb Jay Cutler situation what what was your take on that. Emotions -- run deep in a football game and you gotta have fixed -- At the bomb the on -- doesn't mean anything jamarcus is concerned about playing better himself in Jay is concerned about getting this football team better. You know I've seen coaches and players fired on the sideline players and players it's no big deal. You -- sweep it under the -- and get ready for your next game had big man called you out bump you on the sidelines and national television how would you handle it. Once -- -- -- locker -- jacked him up well exactly mile and a playful way. Camaraderie is important. In camaraderie all is and always you know friendliness and friendly that sometimes you build camaraderie go by going through some really ugly experiences together. Then you have should -- you talk -- give better the next time you have the chance as to take a look at this team through two weeks who's been the surprises have been Tim Jennings who who's been a guy that has stood out that course last race we got. We -- TV show them that we love the seven time pro will have it Tim Jennings not a surprise because he's a pesky defense -- is coming off a great training camp. Again vs Mets in the versatility of the defense wind but getting the play attache McLellan. I know the first couple practices you were very and that guy I -- have like that again you had a chance to watch him play some eleven on eleven football uses versatility uses apple this is -- use the ability to rush from outside the tackle or inside over the guard. I'm really happy what Shea has been able to do. Because I think the best is yet to come out of him when you look at. Defensive effort ingrained bad I mean I I think we'd all take that that outcome going -- I mean it was that huge special teams play that really kind of turn the tide. All in all yeah you got to apply the effort that the Bears. 56 seconds left in the second court they run a fake field goal for a touchdown. The Bears know whenever things are special teams is gonna -- poets they were -- of the he had a word tell. But I do think the defense of performances -- winning performance they got to leave the stadium with their heads held high. Knowing that they put forth a winning performance. Unfortunately it's a team game and everybody walks out of their losers lastly. As you take a look at that this team going forward. Are you OK with where things are offensively do you think last week was that was tight sort of you know baptism by fire as far as play calling and I know we talked about all the different things that he is rot from. Minnesota and whatnot but you know that was the first time he was calling plays with this unit in a really difficult environment. I think the best of this team is still five to six weeks down the road. My feet when they signed Brandon Marshall got Brandon Marshall a trade in the off season walls we did as we thought success through the air that's I had Bears -- for over 500 yards a game. But you lose track of what really got you. To position of success and that's running the ball I think everybody's got a hand in being over enamored with Brandon Marshall on the passing game. To go back to reality you're gonna have success by play action pass and throw on the ball as if he can run unsuccessfully first. So allow me a minute to weigh in on the latest Jay -- situation did. Let's be honest it was like 11000 -- the coloreds arms when he sacked by defender after they've gone through the GA web turnstile. It's football folks it's not a popularity contest colors never gonna win the Walter Payton man of the year award. Even if Jake continues his great charity work which JD RF why. Is it it correctly. He's got an attitude rubs some people the wrong way but let's not make the situation worse. Let him do his job. The guy was ripped by hall of famers and half the league they call them soft. We're not playing that NFC title game at three -- and see out here that made a lot of sense to god it's been beaten like opinion out all season long. He's gonna tap out when he's one win away from the Super Bowl just couple weeks ago Jay was about as PC as. Pleading with the fans to keep the cheering down when the Bears -- -- offense in the red zone. And some people took exception -- that he said please like that about 1015 times. Like a million -- Cutler speak what are you -- if you want Eddie Haskell or Tim Tebow quarterbacking the Bears because the politeness say all the right things fine. That's I can get closer to the Super Bowl Jay Cutler is the bears' best chance to reach football's holy Grail. Brees Brady Rogers they walk it through that household door -- what we have. Attitude and all we got pays his taxes that a lot of taxes hasn't broken a lot about some college. He's got a pretty good job pretty tough job at that as quarterback of your Chicago Bears his the F up Brandon Marshall set at this week. Jay loves the game of football loves to play quarterback and has a gift from Marshall batted. He doesn't like being the focal point or all the attention that comes with -- job. Maybe -- right maybe JH is better throwing the football than saying what you want to hear. There'll always be Cutler bashers. I just don't think the whole city needs to -- line. My thanks to Scottie Pippen and Tom there next. We've got to join us and I sit down with the break David Barrett -- as we get you ready for the Ryder Cup but some of the TV broadcast was that a lot locked -- --
