We start with the Bears defense which rested for fifteen days. But did not look rusty at all Monday night they picked up right where they left off forced four turnovers carried the Bears to a narrow win over the Lions approving them. To five and won his defense has been very good but is this a great defense it could wind up with one of the best in franchise history -- Well. You know that pretty high praise we're talking about there remember that good or not I'm old enough to see in the 63 defense play. -- everybody goes right to 85 but I'm telling you that 63 defense was pretty good too. And then of course you talk about the 06 defense and a bunch of men between by the way 01 team played great defense when when Urlacher Mike Brown were in their second seasons so. This is a really good defense I think it probably you have to say is the best defense in the league right now. Has it compares to those other defense -- you can make an argument for all but 85 you can't put them in the same conversation with -- 85. Young I'm old enough for reverend 63 have a championship team to that it had their defense was was so swarming in and resourceful. I think you know we we take a great individual defense of players and -- practices that certain. -- the line Bob but as a unit I guess is what we're talking about here yes I think this unit. Has a chance to be the greatest and I actually -- -- well I think there's a chance to be. And I actually get put in context suit. Modern day offenses. The passing game is so. Much more sophisticated than it was in the in the sixties and even even the mid eighties. But he's. You know we're we're just what six games and for the Bears but there are not a terrific pace in terms of takeaways. And and him monitoring teams from. Right before we get chris' thoughts take a look at the numbers here we crunch some numbers today if you look at the full screen. Of different numbers in these categories you go back Theres. Some of the best the Bears have had points allowed you see the numbers take away sacks defensive touchdowns. Obviously this team off to a great start but. They haven't played a plethora of great teams yet -- No cap I am not old enough to remember the -- after a faster defense finally. You know it's it's a very good defense and what to do really well -- take the ball away which has excited them the pass rush. Could be better I think you know I mean Peppers is up there and superstar. You know our lockers even though his skating is still star for examines his immaturity so I don't -- -- we -- only five defense I think what we're seeing you mentioned them. Modern day you know offenses as. I'm seeking to make a lot of mistakes you know on me for the listeners that we talk about -- last week. A really bad passes for it as you know you because of your finish the football there's a very good on the ball so I think in that context. They take advantage throughout his mistakes and do a lot of things really well and they certainly go after the ball which -- which is something reflect you know. I -- in the top five or six maybe all time and you know for the -- -- -- really what's been happening. Can I just love Chris -- -- -- context it's not delegates and to think about your okay starting defensive ends on the 85 Bears were hall of famers Richard dent and Dan Hampton -- -- Perry in the Michael inside. Julius Peppers is clearly the best player on this defense is other good players other potential and the Julius Peppers is the best. He might not started on the 85 Bears just just think about that -- might not have so. There's just no comparison there outside some of -- and curious what princess about this man you guys can only go back and look at all fell. The 63 Bears may have had the best secondary have ever seen he got Rosey Taylor and Davey whistle on the corny or Richie petty -- Danny McCray at safety. They were all that notch below hall of fame some people Rosey Taylor still thinks he should be an all and I don't know about that. It was a great secondary so to the point is there have been some really great defense is here. These guys you can have the conversation but the big key is what's gonna happen the rest of the season talk to me after we eleven thing. While you. -- you know -- would and because let's Frazier is one of the best corners have ever seen whose career was ruined -- would be on the other corner. I had an LA Mike Richards. I would think so February 5 of Wheldon -- I had. -- -- -- -- go to you know I'm partial to my right I like Clement a position into the regimen you he'd probably be out Otis NL glove voters say I think Otis is a great player but the young Briggs has accomplished a little bit more. I would personally take Urlacher over singletary about both the coaches would. You'd find a spot for Julius Peppers and that's about it then that's about it. -- at another thing and this is always an interesting conversation we talk about different airs in any sport because of those differences and and rules it's our. But think about this to do defensively. What defensive players were allowed to do. In the previous eras I talked to Harlem hill the great Bears receiver last week on the fault. Then -- you know talked about how. Receivers were could be hit for. Going across the middle order nightmare defensive backs him for the balls and here he didn't. They can do anything -- -- -- rules have changed. Call -- that go beyond five yards -- or anywhere I'll be ready to go and get cream truck and when we see him you know all through the club called. -- sprinkle. But those things were legal guys were hitting guys out of bounds over -- all sorts of intimidating things that were done. Deacon Jones who you know. Mastered. Thought you know moves maneuvers that are illegal now so -- that. Take that into consideration to when you talk about how great these defensive players are out today Brian Urlacher was loose sarcastically talking about. How defensive players now are so restricted where they can hit the quarterback. It was like target about this -- what he did -- you can get the quarterback without getting penalized. And yet he's you know he says it you know blockers get away cut blocks all the time. And go after the -- of offensive players. Necessarily get the. You know it just the more you think about it that defensive tackles on this defense they're not in the conversation with Steve and Michael and and and William Perry. We're Hampton if he moves inside you know the safeties they're not in the conversation with Gary offensive you know and how you -- -- you know Dave -- and four straight pro bowls I mean it just it. The 85 team was a unique team what is intriguing those -- spent around he got three hall of famers on that defense now and Dan Hampton singletary. You might have three hall of famers on this defense I think Brian Urlacher is going to be and I think Julius Peppers probably is gonna be and he's not a slam -- getaway -- us. He's got some more work to do but he start to win me over you know I would've said no a year or two ago but the more he keeps performing like this but everybody's trying to push -- it's not gonna happen guys. You right now he's one of the best corners in football he's playing great he deserves all the accolades he gets. But for the first seven or eight years of his career he wasn't one of the best corners in football when you start talking about hall of fame. That's a little tough but you could end up with three hall of famers up this defense. I think Peppers little thing and really them if you would be that euphoria but there's some. You know the numbers to be a more much more impressive than what nearly double triple team you feel that I think without him out. There's a totally different defense than. I just the world respect for him and what he goes through every game and every snap. And still be able to preferably you know we probably five team you know I'd like to see more pressure -- him him now it you know the Bears have now. That everybody would obviously but it just seems to me that. You know what -- that that -- put to the drop back you know to be working a lot but if you. -- public to a more pressure. Maybe you don't maybe don't go up I think there was nothing to go to the -- to us on active Richard and two years fan had 34 and a half sacks. -- -- It traded for an umpire rich.
