What happened to his TD celebration in Nashville. And why being known as the player that ended Brett favre's career Father's Day. Plus pro football weekly's Paul Clark is breaks down the Bears and taxes and his biggest surprise in the NFL it's the -- podcast. Here we go. I don't feel I know. You play first base. Chipper is. Joining me now Bears defensive end Corey Wootton Corey going back two days at northwestern you've been in Chicago since like 2005. So people recognize you -- on top. But there has to be a difference when you're walking around the city after you scored your first NFL touchdown I would imagine. You know and I have a bit about too much you know other -- -- -- On the rest. The golf. -- on Saturday. And our. -- -- -- partner that we keep in the or anything and so they're very regular war record or is there. I think we need to talk to one of those Smart guys from northwestern a probability and statistics major. For a menu to figure out the likelihood of two northwestern loves you and share McManus combining to score a touchdown. What odds would you have given that before the Titans game. -- though. I didn't think it was going to be church involved and that is. Our guard who has had either myself or Greg though marketed in the he shared had a good -- up yardage. And kind of -- free and our commitment picked it up and not have the rumble recruited them. It was your first. Defensive touchdowns since what your junior year in high schools are right. Yes it is the year art school so strong candidate to be back in the prognosis is -- -- You are many opportunities is beautiful army didn't go. Absolutely what what was the deal with a touchdown dance it looks like guy Anthony Walters made stop that a little bit. You know we're gonna give a little robot and -- actually thought that you know you don't come back and there when you know your successes celebration that they can -- carried out a little longer. Mark like to play you know told him so bring with the teammates. You what Don Bosco prep in New Jersey won a couple state championships there so I guess that was the last time you were probably seven and wind. Have you taken a look back and talked to a lot of your your friends and family since. The storm sandy hit the East Coast and how's everybody doing out there. Yes he has -- through. Right now this my parents. And my aunt and uncle live up there and there -- right -- our current parity even power at all so. Their powerful arm go to period you have with cable -- that was -- -- -- -- -- -- You know they were definitely a very fortunate. With -- have to -- Dating back to football which teammate has helped you along the most since you've become a pro. You know ability who would say is is regarding no he's he's got a great -- to help me anyway here. On the team. He's going in these little looser you can put in but mark my Russia abilities you know yeah. That was a scary scene when -- went down the other day you guys all you know. Got down on one knee. I guess he's okay but I mean that would that was a frightening scene as a good friend of his what was going through your mind as he saw everybody down there on the sideline. You know it is looked to -- really bad at the time. Lisa all of the replay on the Jumbotron there has. And it looked really bad and fortunately. You got out you know guys added up and ended up you know really really tough for the -- American nutrition again. Obviously this defense is having one hell of a year and -- Julius Peppers numbers may not be jumping off the stat sheet for some fans. But folks need to look just you know pass the sack totals in the hurry totals to figure out what kind of impact. Pap is actually having out there in light and some of us out there a little bit on what Peppers is really bring to the table beyond the stats. He commands double -- -- just done about every play it and you know the opposite and that opposite even tackle is definitely get a benefit -- from it and you know on these as you just take a look here whoever the -- -- you know while one -- You know it doesn't go to races we have to do those other guys as a warm water to win. There's so followed and done a good job capitalize on ovals while one opportunity. -- depth of this deal line is is absolutely incredible Cory you've got guys that are inactive for games now that would be starting another NFL teams. When that is the case -- practice become even more competitive before games. Definitely you know. That that's based on who who plays for that week you know some of the guys. So practice you know you're really have to show out you know this -- coach while while you belong here. And -- can that also kind of keep you guys having that edge a little bit when your. You know competing amongst yourself because it's easy to look at the stats and walk around town and here you know. He's a top defense in the league in you know you're gonna go to New Orleans and hear all that stuff so when you realized you know you gotta earn your job from week to week. Connect maybe be one of the silver linings and and helping you guys keep this -- here during this run. Definitely competition you know definitely -- everyone the whole place. And you know as a coach always says so this big competition are wrong this is elevating here or play. You know I definitely. -- visible on the field war are there. For folks that only get to see rod -- Nelly threw -- soundbites what is coach Mary Nellie really liked gay and and how is he kept you guys in check during this run. You guys that I think which separates him from most coaches just. It is the ability to get -- -- -- -- you know like you really keeps it real with us you know we're not doing it the way you want to go let us know. And it doesn't matter you know you're -- Peppers or. You know young -- myself for sure because like he he he -- realistic you -- Garvey Duke is something. You mentioned Shea McClellan I assume you're in on that night when you guys prank McClellan with that 38 dollar and dollar. Dinner tab at the Astros were you not. Our leader. All right so take us through as you guys as the check is being presented to Shea. What was the lookalike and and how long did it seem like before he figured things out. It looked like you seem to go back I think he if you look at her. You know he would kind of sit there -- -- You know my credit card that is only 24000 dollars. We're Joker on though like I did he can help -- -- -- -- they have back well you know those probably included thirty seconds or you know. He we told them that Atlanta it was -- that speak. What was that the prank is played on -- member of the tab when you were rookie. Not a very triggered recuperating pray for you got off easy that. Yeah so I bigger perfecting the first rounder you know you know just is. -- that you know really really get the first round -- -- Ever had -- news you know. A great guy and you know we lead in -- and get them to do that. You're not the only seven win football team here in Chicago. It's Chicago's Big Ten football team northwestern. Checking in at seventy played under Pat Fitzgerald. Your career got off to a bit of a rough start there you had that neck injury your freshman year. Did you ever think. You know this might be it I might not be able to continue my football career. United militant Dynamo. Just because I. You know Richard that he's in my first year. Done all the work outs in the offseason sort -- find -- -- awaiting her from our medical doctors to clear -- -- contact. And you know kind of waiting open so like I got to my flight from back home. We had a week off that this summer school. How -- -- flight and I got a message from marquis doctors say that they cleared to play. And then you know. Oh well I landed I got the message the most out super excited as you that I I didn't know you know you never know some neck injury. Or would the version of the. Corey was -- time in Evanston where you know -- You believe that your future was in the National Football League that you felt you did belong playing on Sundays in the NFL. Definitely mighty mighty Richard junior in 2008 year works -- all. Okay this I kind of saw myself growing as a player. You know just from you know like get off my quickness in my hands. You know -- that was years that I had you know eleven sacks a year. And the the the it would be a force for a decent. What's it been like for you to be a part of kind of the Renaissance of northwestern football from -- -- without being you know to. Too tough on the school a doormat for for a long time but now all I've seen that is is seen. Each and every Big Ten game pretty much every week. -- what's it been like for you to be a part of that as a player and now be a pro and see it from from close range. There's been great just because when I won our first -- -- school there. Know a lot of people that I do you want to in big time school grow on you ignore what does that. You know and then. Who were able to achieve some some pretty great things. You know when I was there but you know nowadays. Has seven wins you know -- 72 and then just the direction that coach is sure I'm going. In I really feel like this guys of them for this program and you know the -- keep can continue to go up. -- you will for ever beat -- trivia answer to who is the player that ended Brett favre's career. Do you feel like that label lawyers there -- some mixed emotions that come -- that. You know. I personally don't like it. This because before before this year that was all -- known for so. Now I want to separate myself you know people -- How is just one play and you know one player -- player. And as sort of shown the sure that I can get you know. Morse sexson and he would be forced in and help this Easter so. And you certainly showed it in Tennessee Corey continued success thanks for joining us we'll talk -- down the road -- -- or. Up next -- Marcus joins us and tells us -- Mike Tice is played college will be put to the test during the Bears challenging second half schedule. The back of the TV broadcast with the publisher and editor of pro football weekly -- markets as we continued to break down the big Bears Houston Texans encounter on Sunday night thanks for stopping by and -- I think it's gonna be the Texans front seven against that Bears offensive line that is a key matchup we look at just as you look at this offensive line as a whole. Is this the type of line that could get to New Orleans. And the Super Bowl or heard as are there to -- question marks in your opinion why I think it's it's hard. Imagine the but so much has gone right at this point that I'm not about to say never -- never say never I just. This is going to be the ultimate test we've seen so far it's one of many reasons people are so excited about this football game. I think what's interesting about -- offensive line is one way to make them better. Is to run the foot -- more you hear this constantly with mediocre to poor offensive lines animal little puzzled. As to why the Bears seemed to refuse to wanna do it. And maybe this is where we're gonna start to see -- remember huge loss for the Houston Texans three weeks before we -- Brian Cushing. Their defensive captain their leading Tampa their best player -- -- he's done is done for the year. Bradie James stepped in and played pretty well he's not Brian Cushing and if you're going to attack this Texans defense that's where you have to do it now. If they do it Sunday night with some success the bodes well for the offensive line Mike Tyson offensive lines have played better in the second half of every season he's been here. As the -- line coach. I think they've got so many issues at both tackle spots right now that that's what people are a little more dubious this year you know a lot of people talked about -- taking from Minnesota and listening to. There's something to having the rhythm of calling it -- and I know Mike is he's you know he's learning on the job in this department I've been talking about this all -- -- I don't know people won't agree they're just not listening. He's a rookie -- know what do you say about rookies and any other position -- quarterback which is basically what you're asking for here. And what you really have to opens he's a better play caller this week than he was last week in better again next week now. We haven't really seen that you know he's had a couple decent games but for the most part he seems to be kind of treading water stuck his start in place running in my -- wanna call it. And end and this is a real challenge for him because this is the first defense the Bears have seen that is literally. Some things away and that's something they haven't faced yet how will he react if they're able to do that. Jay Cutler how he reacts to this Texans defensive line will be interest -- It's well chronicled -- the Monday night and Sunday night affairs and the Thursday night affairs when you've got the the national focus on and and talking about is non verbal isn't in how he conducts himself he comports himself. But this you know if if things could get unraveled here. It and I let's say. It takes him out of his game sometime and that would be my one concern coming into this one that if -- those guys get a lot of pressure on him. Does he sort of get frustrated and check out a bit well I yeah I don't know if I would call it. Checking out of them and that may be the best way to put it but clearly his players affected you know and you look at Jay Cutler. And you say what separates him from the elite quarterback because he's not an elite -- right I get yet we look at the skills we look at the ability. To me -- accuracy and when you talk about what makes Peyton -- -- special Tom Brady Aaron Rodgers they are as accurate as they come. Jay Cutler standing in the pocket is not that accurate look at his completion percentage over the years. Now what's interesting to me which also helps the offensive line is when you move him out of the pocket on the run on the boot. He may be more accurate than anybody and so again. Run the football and then relative to your passing game get him on the move a little -- take advantage of the athleticism help your offensive line and help. Jay Cutler and that's at this Bears defense is gonna seek is if you watched in Houston Texans on tape they're very creative in their offensive sets you'll see Matt Schaub rollout role. Right the other way -- -- fake the run use it Foster. You know all the way you would use the lead back to to try to entice the the linebackers to stay put out. What we see though in the Tampa two -- bully really haven't seen in the first eight weeks because they've only gone up against warning the quarterback and they lost that game and -- Rodgers and the Packers. Good quarterbacks know how to find the vulnerable spots in the Tampa two and that's something that that we need to worry about it's great to be an opportunistic defense but. The good quarterbacks know know how to find those holes I think that's. You and a -- that add to that. Is it one of the things that makes a -- quarterbacks good quarterbacks is the usually have multiple weapons. And that's one of the places where we're -- been a little bit hamstrung because other than Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte. He's not get much help and and I'm not thrilled about the way they're using Matt Forte. I expect the Houston Texans to try and do to Brandon Marshall. What peanut Tillman did Calvin Johnson a few weeks ago ending Kareem Jackson and Johnathan Joseph they got two corners you can do what. Danieal Manning interestingly enough is playing great safety for them they rave about him in Houston so. Maybe this is the first time this year we see somebody at least limit if not take away Brandon Marshall. Will what's Jay Cutler left with you can't depend on DeVon Hester he may make -- great right here and there. And Earl Bennett really hasn't been Earl Bennett ever since -- Marshall got here yeah and we'll see if -- Jeffrey heck returns are the latest on that if if he's you know he's not he's been out for a considerable time now on as you take a look at this the way this team is assembled how much. All of the success do you credit. To fill hammering what he was able to do this team all all of a mirror at least a ton of it now granted most of the pieces were here when he got here that he came in and say here's who we were last year we're 73. By quarterback got hurt we went right in the tank. Not gonna let that happen he went out and -- how many get one of the best receivers in football for that quarterback to work with. -- the get the best backup quarterback in the NFL I believe Jason Campbell is that and they get one of the best number two running backs in football Michael Bush so I love all of those things now. I'm disappointed he didn't try and do more with the offensive line but I -- you can argue you can only do so much in one offseason. You know I was very concerned coming into the year about defensive tackle and cornerback I still think the Bears defensive tackles are being overrated choose Peppers is not as -- as good as they seem. But you can't say anything negative about peanut Tillman and Tim Jennings right now they are playing. As well as any pair of corners in the NFL and so in that case you still have to credit Phil Emery because -- never. Tim Jennings was benched at the end of -- right right he said and he got Kelvin -- which is a great upgrade as far as depth over Zach -- dec now to. But they stuck with Tim Jennings I think Phil Emery -- a candidate for executive of the year of surprises say they -- you think the our positions right now on this team that the fact that -- you know they've got guys that are active they'll probably starting on on some other NFL clubs you know I I keep hearing that and I'm not sure that it's too bad because Amobi Okoye was on the street Daytona there's got somebody else could have gotten to know -- to -- I like I think he's played well -- strictly an -- tackle he doesn't have the flexibility. That that most of these other tackles due to maybe go three technique maybe go anchor. Henry Melton is great we'll let him get into a gap with the first step in creating pressure. He's not very good against the run and Stephen -- just inconsistent you just don't know what you're gonna get. Alright as you look at this team now again we're gonna see how much different opponent the second half seven of the eight teams. -- with a 500 record or better for the for the Bears after the halfway mark when it's also dug deep do you feel that this is. I championship make up but at caliber team that could get to the big game. You know I there's no doubt in my mind that -- playoff team minute and I felt that going into Berman and nothing has changed my mind it turned out to be a few games better than I thought they were. I thought there were a wild card team might begin -- suspect now all the injuries in Green Bay there -- they're pretty certain to be the NFC north champ. Got a chance to get them by and we know how important that was we know how critical that was. You know six and they got the Super Bowl he was critical do you -- because they got a sub 500 team almost a walk to the title game. And Cutler stays healthy who knows what happens so. I think they've got a great shot and -- that increase your -- tremendously. I don't think they're as good as the San Francisco 49ers I don't know if there -- good as the New York Giants so to put them in the Super Bowl. Is tough for me right now but that's what's so exciting about the next two weeks -- find out. By a week from Monday we're gonna know where the Bears stack up with the other elite teams both in the NFL and in the NFC. And then we'll have a better idea as we can't miss the rest of the NFL what's your biggest surprise thus far is it the Eagles struggles. Is it the way other Colts have resurrected everything -- with coaching staff with Andrew Luck a new system. Is it Payton being Payton in Denver. You know the Colts are great story -- but there's so many ancillary things going on there there's the unfortunate illnesses chuck banana which has been an inspiration to them. In certain games I expected into left to do what he's done. Never thought their defense could be a serviceable as it's been. For the most part without either Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis hit -- played together twice I think right now one or two times this year and Freeney is still not himself. So they're great story my problem with the story I don't think there are legitimate playoff team even if they get them back and scare anybody. You know I look at the Philadelphia Eagles and it's a surprise -- we thought they could be this bad. But I hope people realize four of their five starting offensive linemen are out three of -- done for the year their three best offensive linemen in Peters Kelsey and Herremans. What does -- -- gonna do I think at some point we talk about the Bears offensive line not being good enough you've offensive line doesn't exist. So that brings us to Peyton Manning and the -- beat Denver Broncos I expected Peyton Manning to be great. I didn't think he'd come back and play if he wasn't going to be great I think they'd win as many games is that once so far but I've got one you didn't mention I think. The best story in the NFL right now as -- Adrian Peterson. Because to do what he's done at running back. Basically eight or nine months after ACL complete reconstruction the equivalent of this would be. If Derrick Rose was playing at the MVP level by New Year's Day have a tremendous going to be on the court yeah any shouldn't be because this is so unheard of what Adrian Peterson has accomplished is unbelievable. As we looked we always talk about the coaching carousel final minute here. Are we -- and he reads on the hot seat Romeo and Alan Casey what are some of the guys that you look at right now that are probably gonna be. Lining up for unemployment when this is all said and done. Well there's there's no question that Norv Turner is in big trouble in San Diego whether he survives or not I don't know. I don't see any way that -- your -- can survive in Cleveland. You know Marvin Lewis probably will because he does that he shouldn't he should be in big trouble Rex Ryan's in big trouble with the New York Jets. Unfortunately our friend Ron Rivera Chico's got problems because with Marty Ernie fired. They may bring in a -- collar type who wants control a lot of things. I don't think -- should be fired but there's questions about him as well. And even a few other places you could look I think Ken was a hell be OK in Arizona look what's happened to that team. This is going to be one of the biggest years for coaching changes in the history of the league at least seven or eight may be as many as ten or eleven. We're listening to your dial global radio on Sunday night of course we'll see your pro football week weekly each and every week -- Comcast sports -- that -- -- -- from Japan.
