Transcript
Two of the best in the NFC square off -- -- -- to nightmares and 49ers. Both teams without their starting quarterback is due to concussions for the latest we go live to the left coast. The San Francisco we bring in the Tribune's lead columnist David offs David today we get the news that Alex Smith is not going to be able to go tonight. Now that it's Colin -- -- against Jason Campbell. You give the advantage to the Bears in the experience factor because Campbell Scott seventy plus starts. Both -- for the Bears from that standpoint cap but I think that in the back -- bowl she also looked out okay what does that mean for the running games. And at the 49ers probably have the edge of the offensive line Frank Gore. It's gonna run the ball and the Bears have to stop the run to have to stop the run. Against the 49 is better than they did against the Texans I still think the Bears defense is the only defense they didn't prove that they war against the Texans and I think that if they can keep. Craig gore in check and mate Colin cap predict beat them to first NFL start this is Jason Campbell seventieth that's a big difference so the Bears have an opportunity. -- lot of adversity comes opportunity that they -- and you know Jason Campbell that's true for. Also Mike Tice you've got to see some impact from this dramatic you know. Game plan today because Mike Tice has not had a great. You lately you know this is -- an opportunity for him to show without Jay Cutler they can still do something. And move the football down the field get a little creative. Hey David it's -- how is Jason Campbell been. -- with the media newest teammates this week is -- guy who inspires confidence. I can't I can't hear him. David to the question was. This Jason Campbell -- better this week does he seem to be inspiring confidence in his teammates. Well there's no doubt that obviously that -- we take -- that nobody should expect them but that's the guy that has the total. Confidence. In the offense from the offense and look this is a game that. This what you signed Jason Campbell signed him to win games like this he's not. Caleb Haney a year ago about this time of year we came out to the Bay Area we expected good things out of -- maybe I did too. And though you we saw what that got the Bears that's different. I think a lot of times with -- that there -- trying to fool themselves into thinking this could happen. Jason Campbell has done it before on a pretty big stage the first round draft pick. He's got that swagger but he's got an air of confidence so I think they believe I don't find Brandon Marshall that builds more -- It's. Hey David Bell Rogers. Behind you it looks like a pretty decent night there I'm sort of forecasted yes. As a battle of the field goal kicker -- gold against David Akers. Certainly over and under maybe five and a half field goal tries. Be a good night for the kickers a good night persuaded can't. Well Phil I think if not to gonna decide to some penalty kicks it could be nine to six. That's a good observation it's a beautiful night it is it it's no rain expected it's kind of cool in the fifties. All I haven't gotten the feel report from Robbie Gould and go to all these past often approved it yet left to wait to see if he's able to do that. You know look probably like to talk a lot in the kicker -- should touch and talk as much as he does but if it's comes on the kicking game tonight I think the Bears feel good about it. Lovie Smith called out -- gold after the Texans game. He doesn't he do that with anybody that he made that miss an issue. And I I think the pressure that Robbie -- performed at night and it's a great night for that because both defenses -- and keep the score low. Hey David Sullivan. He hearing. Yeah yeah is that. I -- couple weeks ago we are looking at this two game series Houston. San Francisco is kind of a measuring stick but now without that Alex and without Cutler and there. Or can we take out of this even if they do win this isn't that big a deal -- I'd still. Measuring stick gamers that then. Kind of tossed off the boards. That's great points elegant look through it it went from going to one to get a statement out of these past two games. To really just survival. That's what it's about you lost a quarterback in the second half against the Texans that really was a false positive or false negative. You could really take out of that what you wanted to get I mean the defense played well yeah had a hard time scoring the football. We knew that about the Bears before hand. What we're gonna find out tonight is. How good is that offensive line. Can't they run the football when everyone expects them -- on the football what did you get Jason Campbell. We know the -- gonna play good defense I think they're gonna really -- don't happen it because it's the rookie quarterback in essence make his first NFL start. But it's the double put two guys in a bad -- I think that's going to be the thing that comes out tonight but then again. You know the Bears when people are gonna wanna say -- we have they. You know it means a lot because they beat the forty niners but again the 49ers without Alex Smith are different team. So I think it's just about survival. You want to get to eight to gonna maintain the lead Univision that -- had a tough month ahead. David last couple things before we let you go we appreciate taken time out there. Very offensive line has been much maligned they did a pretty decent job against JJ watt company no sacks allowed. But I know the weather conditions also hurt impeded the rush may have helped the O line hey. Do you think this is a bigger challenge on the road against Sampras -- think that's that it was a week ago in inclement weather in Chicago. There's no doubt about it that's the bigger challenge here is why. The Texans were you able to. You know if the Bears were able to -- the Texan who think they might have a deep threat they might have a passing game even as limited in a one dimensional that might be. Really doesn't exist tonight so I think the 49ers are gonna force Jason Campbell to beat them. He doesn't mean anybody yet as much confidence the Bears have -- him as well as well I think he can play. He's still got to prove it so I think that makes the challenge greater because this -- the defense playing a home. With a ton of confidence knowing that they have played a different level because of playing without their starting quarterback so tonight output that -- us mich higher. The -- the challenge meter did you know ahead of the Texans. I the last thing for you novel concept Robbie Gould was telling the truth and of course. Somebody had a hand right an apology form to put his name on. -- and -- that was ridiculous that Lovie Smith called him out the guys the most accurate kicker in the league he hit the -- one time and inclement weather from forty plots and the coach wants the fire on him because the organization wasn't happy with what he said about the turf. That was a bunch of garbage -- The Roderick that's your breakout you're negotiating his next day contract yet clear what retired I I've got time on my hands. You do OK -- we got the fifth most accurate kicker in NFL history and I know that because he told me last week. You -- situation where nobody likes with a few condition as a Soldier Field. It's it's a situation where could have been addressed in a lot more professional manner. He came back and apologize but given credit for doing that but he was out of line he knew it it took care but. Dave will say back here in this very nobody.
