Pat Boyle sits down with Teddy Greenstein to discuss Big Ten realignment in part two of this week's podcast - 11/22
Transcript
Joining me now the podcast the Tribune's Teddy Greenstein a -- Big Ten expansion on the docket this week Maryland and Raptors are added to the mix and then there were fourteen look I get. Expanding to the East Coast -- in the revenue stream. It will create for the Big Ten now -- -- as we know. Football's the money maker these two schools are thriving with their football programs. Do you agree with Jim Delaney that bigger is better. How depend on your perspective. -- if you -- Joseph Big Ten. You don't care about odd ball in TV markets. Demographic. And all that garbage you'd want good football games and not. You can't really say that outing marrow in the Rutgers great good football Intel Rucker I think you really can be a powerhouse in I. I liked -- I -- probably get that East Coast bias is a new Yorker. But I can be great program you know behind the big dog really think there in the street New Jersey which is actually a lot of people and a good recruiting. But the big picture and all this I mean I think there is a danger of you know watering down the football program in the -- -- make more money. You know you talk about there being a new Yorker and the fact that Raptors comes from the Tri-State area they're not very popular there Teddy I mean. And make it. I mean they're not selling out for their own team she got to -- a nice job at least -- resurrecting the program but do you. Do you think all of a sudden Merrill Lynn and -- going to the Big Ten. Will elevates. Those programs and give them a chance tick -- compete at a higher level or is gonna take some time. Yeah I mean here here's -- implicated in New York Times study and they and oh yeah in Chicago. I believe it was 20%. Of the sports editor I would just try to reserve people there but consultant cultural office 20%. New York which we think of is purely approach Allen had 50%. So. You know it's not such a huge difference status 15% you've got -- -- at Notre Dame and Wisconsin fans and certainly some people who like Rutgers now. Right now notebook big. But I think part of the reason Rucker and sell out games is because those fans are not that jacked up to the scene that played big east teams now. Where are they got the talent and they come to town and Wisconsin and Michigan and even northwestern. Did -- regular people covered for a bit and the dangers Eagleburger Austral. I think things will get much better than I think a really big game and maybe they complained about like stadiums so humble about Rutgers Maryland you know it to -- is strictly. Because that Washington DC area that's very coveted eligibility. And let's talk about the non revenue teams that mean DC to Nebraska is a two and a half to three hour flight I mean I'm sure. Merrill Lynn and Raptors is done they've done the math on this they've done the accounting and they know that. The coffers will be filled thanks to football but I mean you've got to think this is gonna double their travel expense for all the other non revenue sports. Yes and no expense is good but student athletes as they like COLT that always get forgotten about in the east saying it'll. The big east is a joke in terms of all the -- San Diego's Adrian. I think there's talk about BYU joining the big East -- so closer. 3000 mile trip since 200 for the football team to do it you know a couple times a year but. How about the smaller teams. That -- last academic support -- and nobody became so. It can be brutal some of these trips. You know the Big Ten yeah I mean I they've got to be a negative for people that I go to Nebraska. To make that trip. But in the big picture you know they think is a make it is basic and make all these cool richer and really think the presidents and chancellors when it was first presented were probably skeptical of their. But they're overall velocity is in -- we trust and mentioned being Jim Delany is he's never really had a big misstep and made a richer every single step. Did he miss step not grabbing and bigger profile East Coast team I mean is -- in Maryland the best option there should they have tried -- for hitter Syracuse. Earlier he could go. Mean Syracuse football I -- a little better than Maryland. A little more tradition there but not corny and like god we were there -- western. After being in a year and it says we're never coming back here it's like -- like ninety degrees and it held so for that reason alone until they install air conditioning and I think now they're cute kid trying to pick and Pittsburgh I think would have been -- better -- in Maryland certainly in terms of geography and a better football program has got to play and hold staying in NFL stadium. I there's a lot of good stuff there of punctured the lady would -- that here they're not -- great people in Pittsburgh is there aren't that DC Baltimore area but. I really do think that. They plan plan was to stay at twelve they're gonna have this collaboration with the pac twelve. And that was an -- -- some of these expansion concern. In in the collaboration helped our. And the SEC stretch in the period sexist and the ACC stretched and doling -- feels right or wrong like way you we we can't let all these other countries that crappy teams so what we should -- expend as well. So what's next for Delany are we holding at fourteen. July Theres -- sixteen. Sarah Halladay yeah. There before me yeah I don't think there's any reason to think that that they're gonna stay at fourteen. You know what this pulling. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Conference is because inning you take a look at fifty million dollar exit fee for Maryland friends CC I mean obviously they're not afraid to go laughter. You know charter member from the ACC in and and I don't know who's gonna pay that tab okay sure Maryland is but for for a program that's been struggling money wise it's they are pretty quick to pull the trigger. Yeah I mean and they'll clean it up and then that they won't have to -- a fifty you know to build a good this year and quality third whenever there's big numbers put. It's not a big number compared to you know what the Big Ten is estimating it's gonna distribute -- -- 2017. Where were they get up -- 4344. Million you know these other competent you to think. Why green distribute twenty million to fourteen for to a great. But the Big Ten is gonna go to ABC ESPN and at whatever partners they have. Including fox and a few years and down. Oh my god they're gonna get an absolute -- so. I think right now you have to assume that they'll be -- -- some plane and go in you know people are gonna speculate Georgia Tech Virginia and North Carolina teams like that. Notre Dame to the ACC was the catalyst to the big ten's expansion do you believe notre Dame's run at perfection on the gridiron assured them of staying that semi independent for years and years to come. I just think it you know nobody wants to beat the athletic director at Notre Dame. When they lose their independence. Yeah they've they've taken pole so alone and it's like 95%. Today remain independent. We we're depending you're one of one you know you you -- schedule you complain. Florida California. Taxes Boston New York you please you're alone it's good -- recruiting and it is special and when you're in the league. You just one of a bunch so. They're gonna say independence. I -- -- but they've forever at least you're not a walk around the planet. You've been of course covering northwestern football season I think fans of venue or at a crossroads right now moral victories they don't cut it anymore eight win seasons gathered nice. But I think many feel. That Pat Fitzgerald and they cats missed a great opportunity in the conference this season would you think. Well there's no question about it. That positioning game it's it was a brutal that -- what you have to win. Because -- McCluster played so well came culture played well and you play well then requested. Yeah. I don't look at the Penn State in the Gretzky game the same way as the fans -- Penn State applicant. You know if -- -- one yet that would have been perfectly nice and they deserve to win the game that would quarters clutch announcement third or the Nebraska -- -- reporters only and they -- Nebraska turned it over three times and had a dumb penalty under and a better Barca but on. So the -- people if people what -- like like oh boy did capitalize on whatever roster was you know was undefeated right now what gets what. They're not winning by twelve year old or it's all the victories are close games too so you can't just say if you look at because walker and felt like we just -- these. Or what -- Christian -- it will work place Saturday -- party would love to get it -- you that you could even say that that Minnesota. But you know we've heard rumblings almost since. Basically before the season started the way he handled things that Penn State I mean yeah but his job security where do you think that's that right now for Pacman in Champaign. That they late mayor's -- be the Penn State -- also -- that happened right for a Big Ten football media days that that you got a lecture from Jim Delany and down. Yeah the -- grilling in the to serve but it cat you know we're all over the whole season. That thinks that he's -- for at least three years I mean Illinois. -- the administration. Has been an absolute joke it's been through a revolving door. And the upper level there. You can't fire -- guy after one year you got to let him bring his players and and and it's a little football and being. You know if you say Israel a couple of you -- once every ten years they have coaches don't leave there with winning records. So relative to ruin something he's just. Taken something that was kind of made it worse but it's one here you gotta give himself a. I don't know if you give him three years for you definitely given my year to right -- thank you very much for joining us Big Ten expansion should be interesting down the road happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. And thanks to Teddy Greenstein and -- they are joining me today on the podcast we thank you for watching. Happy Thanksgiving everybody will see next time.
