Let's move to college football Sunday they were partying in the -- and they're probably celebrated. I'm asking is are heading to the large ball for the first. Ever BCS bowl and they'll play that game with a new head coach yes -- theory is here and he joins us now. On Chicago Tribune live congratulations. -- now I heard that -- as soon as you're announced as head coach at northern Illinois. Fifteen minutes later -- now. You're going to be playing in the BCS bowl yeah I was pretty -- That's exciting your first game will be against Florida State first of all. You've waited your entire career to become a head coach how does it feel to finally. I'll be where you want me. Well good fortunate and thankful I think in other words that come to mind. Timing is everything in this business like a lot of businesses and we had a great year and I learned a lot from coach -- and you know powers that be in Jeff conference president Peters saw -- to do it so really out of my -- so real thankful. One of the main factors in and you getting this job of courses is your performances and the way that offensive line and all off and has performed but also. Players who really respect you really want to -- how good does that make you feel to know that you're the player's choice. Yeah way it does and you know as an assistant coach you build those relationships. And that really intimate relationships. And so it felt good -- got a reception like that from the whole team general thankful to them minute. That that's something that I haven't explained a lot of people that try to hold that from myself pretty special. Right and you got to practice on Saturday. Open to -- in the carousel of our final exams are that. Coming up fought hard to get a deal would there. Try to get to use that as a time to really prepare for for fours and we're gonna start and you you know this weekend goes Saturday son and then we just have to leave finals. And you can't really do everything you know their student athletes and student comes first so you got to make sure they're really locked in and do that and then -- really dig on. You know a week from tomorrow and will be going Friday to Sunday and kind of get into all that Florida do you plan Florida State game plan and all that stuff. Who who do are you identify some of the leaders are obviously Jordan Lance does deserve. Sort of the face of the team is as far as the players. What are other -- leaders on the team that you are gonna look too especially during this time transition to playing one good thing we do we don't name captains necessarily. We use our seniors and although seniors no matter what your role as you planned special teams your starter your part time you're a leader. And so that's what makes this team special all those guys across the board you name guys like Allen Baxter Sean -- -- Tyrone Clark. You know all those guys cross border great leaders but maybe some of them even when you have heard of our best leaders. Coach coach what about -- bulletin board material right -- her streak came out and he basically blasted it as. I think he's wrong I think this is why the BCS is in place to give the quote unquote little guy a chance. Is that something that's been talked about maybe among your coaching staff amongst the players may be the prove the world wrong. Well not amongst coaches that yet because we scattered wrong road crew and their own stuff so. But it's certainly been talked to with our players and you know you can't stop them with the social media today the way this. But I agree to the great thing about the BCS and really the genius problem flawed the system is. Is it gets opinions like that and gets people talking and that's great for college football and this year to subs we really good. From only. We've got two teams. QB CS schools that -- They're tech coaches left before bowl games and it doesn't look right at least from my standpoint for the sport when that happens is there something that you think the NCAA should do whether it's. Pushed back recruiting or put a moratorium on recruiting so. Schools don't need a new coach in place now horse or something or. Is this just the way it is and there's nothing that can change about it. Yeah it's such. I agree with -- it's a mess and I'm in the profession and I called my profession. It's a complete mess but it's a mess a lot of levels because you you say the NCAA comes and willing yet to figure the university. And then you gotta figure the team so who who really. Will -- a really start whereas really and how do you get this thing solved I don't have the answers for that. I know the system that's in place it's probably not the best for universities and kids. Real problem -- for coaches either but it's where we are right now today. So. Title I don't have an answer for you did you have an inkling that. Dave was talking with somebody or was this a complete shock you and other coaches what has happened there I was a shock to me or call. You know we dropped back from the Mac we don't stay that night of Mac championship so we got back at 6 o'clock in the morning I had in the six year old they were cashton. So you know I barely got any sleep got a call and he said you know he was alone and -- the call for -- the and so on before I was -- and so. And then clearly show he was shooting knew that the appeal -- -- contest but -- how does it begin a great point that's the business there in right now. So let's talk about you on the road. Know how much easier recruiting -- -- -- -- a BCS bowl game are you walk a little bit of a pep in your step when you -- it's -- now we you know someone asked today how much -- yet I said not much and maybe two hours but I don't feel it because. You know this is -- still it's so good for the university and so good for us and you know you guys are recruitment for me right now in which is the best thing in the entire world -- Why the school gets recognition your program gets recognition and how how much does that help some elected George lynch who's probably one of the best dual threat. You know quarterbacks in the country be able to at least get his name mentioned in terms of Heisman Trophy candidate. Well it's great for Jordan. It's well deserved for Jordan. Make no mistake about that he is. Fantastic football player. Probably better person not science Connolly was -- him say that a lot of people say that but. And he has he didn't get around this kid. But it's good and it's not only good for him and I QB the first once they don't care about -- that I just care about women. And that's what makes us go so it's great for teams well Roger it can get from from Indiana and you've seen over the mid American conference -- -- seven bowl owls will teams this year. What's your assessment of the -- of the Mexico overall well the the matches and a great place right now. With all the teams that are -- like you said and the thing that's really even the playing field for me when I played is 85 scholarships cost more. You know you can only take so many right now a lot of good football players left that the Big Ten didn't recruit and talked to our guys are a lot of guys in the room. You know our team room that you know we're getting recurrent at the end of that for some reason Millar then hit so they end up at our place. And they're guys that you know we beat teams like that on two because of who we are so -- diminish that but. It's good because of the birdie and the numbers of scholarships across the board. And I'll take the -- this year against anybody.
