In nine -- finals against Pittsburgh did you think you guys are ready. To win the cup I thought I thought we're the favorite going -- -- career -- and you won eleven straight don't then we're on a roll we -- we couldn't seem to be beaten. What we didn't really take into consideration. Is that. Pittsburgh was seven in a row and Rolen and they ended up tying us and that and that series because they swept us four straight but. You know we felt even though they had Beriault yarder recchi pocket you know those are those big guys how we felt that we. That we were the team to be an even in first period when we're 41 we're like we're gonna win the Stanley Cup and then. Don't the Mario and younger foot kick this rate in us and we are done. As you look back to your career what's your biggest if you have any NHL regret is there any regret you have. It's a team -- go to I don't think it's I don't have any regrets but if if I went back and change something. I would I would a changed how 9596. Transpired with my contract talks with with mister -- I was wondering what my life would be like if I played in Chicago my entire career. You know what my what my. My reputation would be what my -- my legend would be what would be my. I mean points that would happen. So I think about that aspect and you know maybe. The -- -- didn't have that ego clash about the changing of times about bigger contracts about. Television. -- which ultimately got me traded out of the city so I would I would I would go back in the and change. How we handled everything to make sure that I stay here -- With his son -- taking on are obviously a lot has changed within that organization you've seen it not only you know from a player but now as a broadcaster. What is the relationship like between Jeremy Roenick. Rocky works in the Blackhawks -- now I think it's really good we've we've come a long way in and talked quite often. Since. Especially since I retired. I'm really proud -- what he's done with this organization to really go against the grain and and do what is right to give the Blackhawks back to the fans and make this. A hockey city again the best thing he ever did was hired John McDonough and -- -- can put them mentally into than to play your -- -- Very. That it's amazing. How they have really. Change this whole organization into. Romo's first class organizations in all sports. And a great place to play in and they know talked to John Toews about it and and Patrick -- about -- real lucky to play here. So my hat goes off to to Rocky to. To have the guts to say hey you know what we need to we need to do it this way and just happen they won the Stanley Cup. Would you like to see your number retired here have -- that -- -- two things I won my in my career. For the rest of my life and in terms of the sports world. Number one is is make the hall of fame that's I would that would just top it off and number two would have my number retired here in Chicago. Now that I couldn't. I can -- the next day indeed happy sky and the whole world with those two things happen so I hope it does I feel my relation is enough for talks -- If not I'll work harder to make that better. But that Jersey was really important to me and it would be nice if I don't see anybody elsewhere and that number on the ice would make me feel really -- he had a moment towards the end of your career. Will later in your career where -- in Philly and -- the opportunity go to Detroit. And you made a family decision at that time and I think you're right. It was a real tough call but it was. I was in Detroit when I decided to go to Philly I was -- chilly next day goes he Philly Greg talked to called me up and said you know you gotta come down here. Tom Clark called me say we're gonna sign somebody else to -- make your decision so I put a couple of things -- -- number one that was there at the surroundings a horse surroundings from my family my wife and my daughter. And the second thing that really that got my head that I was like I don't think about this was. How are Chicago fans who feel like when -- -- Yeah I mean that's really that really made me nervous I can count is awesome -- -- play against him continue to play great team. I'm a huge Steve Weizman fan. But playing eight years in Chicago and -- -- so I just a decision that's go to Philly and they win the cup that year. In retrospect I would say. You know 2004 is my best chance won a Stanley Cup filly and the second best chance ever had was in 2001 when I -- both went to Detroit and went to Philly. But if I would know that I would have said. Screw worse than Dominique and if you're good effect well -- you've sought with Shelly Johnson what he experience that you knew I mean that that is I think it is tough to go to the arrival. -- what'd -- tell you what your relationship was like with some other of the top athletes in Chicago lot like Michael Jordan. What what was your relationship like with -- -- had a I had great relationships I played golf with Michael quite often. You know we're friends and you know -- being at the top of our sports at the same time was it was always has that was fun that Michael's. Still today one of the you know greatest athletes and one of my favorite athletes of all time wonderful wonderful guy. In my -- for myself. Chilean and Dennis Rodman we -- -- a -- in the city of men get a good Robinson or -- our story that I don't think the city's ever been the same since we left but -- you know like Jim Harbaugh and I were really good friends Michael Huff played for the Sox. And I can go on and on Sox players. Bears players you know Chechen men and I are still very very good friends very close. So it is you know those are guys that you never lose you lose track of I can call up Ozzie Guillen you know. And you know you'll hear my voice and -- and he'll go right to the -- to the phone give me argument that these are great relationships that made and I'm sure that when you talk about playing your entire career here that that that kind of that bond that you have with those types of guys that's. Something that would it would only enhance today had to share of the entire time no no question that and you know he thinking about it because I think my reputation here and she would just who have been I know what it is now and it would have been. Actually -- out of this atmosphere no one topic that doesn't get discussed a lot -- performance enhancing drugs in hockey. I know what I was on the beets in the late ninety's early 2000 there were a couple guys I looked at like. Pop that's who have that that that duties that just doesn't look right there. Idea do you think performance enhancing drugs. Has been. In the NHL more than than not at all zero. It's -- that you guys that there's 222 times -- guys who have gotten. Tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. One was Brian for art -- he got his -- -- -- -- you take insurance so they can seek as I was was literally you know -- out of his head. Any other guy it was Jose Theodore in Montreal because he was taking Propecia -- he had to hit. K so those -- the two situations that happened both you know good excuses but. I would -- performances and drugs are gonna help hockey players hockey players need to be. No I mean then strong you know -- I -- I think but it wouldn't help you with recovery time and hours ago their car wrecks every night playing three games four games that we know it would it would work against us I don't really feel would work against this place in the national likely either random drug test four times a year. You have no idea when Linda. When did he who. US team US drug administration comes in and says the Olympic organization says him and we're gonna between -- you today and if you don't you're going to be suspended fifty games anyway. So because there are those those. Those blind test. Our guys don't even mess with that. And then it's into it and you'll never see in hockey are -- now let's go back to that some are flyers taking on the Hawks in the Stanley Cup finals you are working for NBC. And what the heck was that like for -- if it was it was phenomenal and it was hard all same time those. It was not a good situation for me because I'm a win win Norman a lose lose the two teams that just I am. -- passionate about flyers fans -- way they've treated me and and my relationship with flyers fans this is is off the chart that same here with here in Chicago so. At Schneider was one of the best owners sure that if not the best owner I've ever had sports. And hockey. So here I am who's gonna win your flyers have once in 76 from -- Hawks haven't won in fifty years it's gosh. And then. It then when the Hawks one that did that emotion that came over me you know when you've played years -- any team that brought you win that bright you know as a baby and turns you into the players that you are you spilled. Gallons of blood gallons of sweat he'd work as hard as you can try to win a cup for that team in the city you know sudden and you were able to do it. You know and you love it you still passionate for it you never do it and all of a sudden. That cup goes over that crest and it was that was it for me and you know that if if it was fairly you know I wouldn't surprise me if that happened to but. In Chicago is that is near and dear very very special part of my life and and my history in hockey and -- when that when they won that cup it was like. Did you regret at all getting emotional on the air -- I don't know that's German -- I emotional I am a passionate guy played passionately I've played with a motion. I have no I have no problem shown people my emotions I think that's. That makes you real. You know -- we're real people doesn't matter when you're on TV here whether you're. He -- just. He know how regular -- idea. I love my sport I -- the teams they played for and I loved the fans cheered us on and you know -- that's so we should -- and it's.
