CSN's Kip Lewis and John "Moon" Mullin discuss the offense's part in Lovie Smith's firing, how the new person might fit in and who that new coach may be - 1/1
-- the telephone Booth along with moon Mullin and we heard Phil Emery discuss. His reasoning behind the firing of Lovie Smith and I don't think there is really -- surprise for Ireland two things that stood out. Not making the playoffs five of six seasons the other thing was really the inconsistency in the office he mentioned the coordinators on the -- -- the offense was never really. As good as the defense here in his nine years. I think I mean those -- reasons again Drew Brees all the all play out from the over the last half of the season so yeah it. If you're always surprised when it happens but you're not surprised that it did happen. And the obvious problem was the offense that said. It's pretty clear that the new coach is gonna have to be -- Jay Cutler when he gets here for awhile so. He had some pretty obvious things but I thought EPO was very. Complimentary Lovie Smith because the defense was good for a long time here so. -- clear the offense wasn't good enough for so that that was -- And I think going forward here he was very clear in what he -- he talked about synergy with the the next head coaching and really he left all options open whether it's an offensive coach defensive coach whatever their background has to be some of that is just a fit and I think that's important because people get so caught up in the big names. But he just has to be the right guy for what the Bears have here at the end. Think it's a huge point Kevin -- people get caught up with big names who are big names because they want they were somewhere else or they get caught up in. This year 34 guys your fourth three of their system guys you got a bit I think Phil Emery clearly well thank you said he is looking beyond just the specifics whether it's an offensive system is not a it's and that does not to just be a certain kind of defense -- -- what he said there was you he's got to make use of what he's got who's gonna prepare the whole team option right away so he's got to work according. -- think that's opposite of maybe what a team like Indianapolis did last year when they had the changeover they really just ripped up their roster almost started all all over the other had a rookie quarterback obviously that's done very well. But that's not to be the case here I think they feel like they have some talented players is very clear he felt like some guys. Need to be utilized better especially on the offensive side the ball. So I think that's gonna be key for this coach looking at his roster understanding this roster and figured out what he wants to do it. Yeah I mean he's not gonna tell Julius Peppers go for don't want to tell who you we rent go 34 is gonna -- -- Matt Forte wasn't used to that that neighborhood came up obviously. So he's gonna have to work. And and I think have a connection -- some of these guys I don't think -- was going to be part of you -- away was resolved extraordinary with Mike Martz. But you know there there does have to be a mix here rather than just simply adherence to a system. And that's why you know it's funny I was driving and driving up ridiculous and the radio people throughout the names of Jon Gruden Mike Holmgren Andy Reid. That's why I think it won't be one of those type of guys because those guys especially got -- -- he's been in general manager he's been a president. Those guys are used to having some authority. And I think whoever comes -- has to be Simmons. Willing to. Work with Phil Emery and together. I think that's a big point giving that you doesn't consider. Personnel and coaching to be. A single job -- that Mike Holmgren is gonna want that kind of single -- -- and and I would always strive to if you believe I would love Michael -- -- if he brings Brett Favre was -- -- I would love to have. Tony Dungy or did Jon Gruden if he's coming here with -- happened and Simeon Rice and -- so I think they need to look beyond that I think Phil Emery goes. I think you mentioned Jay -- well. It was interest in he did say that he feels like tick collars a franchise quarterback. He feels like he's a talented guy a but he also said you don't there was kind of wait and see in terms of of the contract he wants this head coach. To maybe give his evaluation as well and what he sees in Jay Cutler it's good which I think is. Almost like what what maybe he was hired under and you know this is Lovie Smith -- you know what between him permanently. But he is here here's -- he we think he's a franchise quarterback. And Angelo told me even if he doesn't see him that way is gonna have to do a lot of explaining why doesn't seem that way that. You know that this is not a guarantee. Extended contract project -- Yeah and a lot of decisions certainly have to be -- number one most importantly the next head coach of the Chicago Bears and then I think following that will be all the personnel moves -- I follow. Here's some time in the off season that does -- for us and give Lewis his moon -- up here at -- all.
