I mean I -- dominant maybe -- gets you the most polarizing athlete in all of Chicago. Maybe the entire -- -- out. Jay Cutler arguing Jay's -- or have you seen enough. Our quarterback former Bears signal caller Jim Miller joins us we'll have a break down his mechanics his attitude and his verdict. Is he the Bears franchise quarterback. And the Tribune's David hot stops Bible break down notre -- -- BCS title game the Bears coaching search. They won't play futures Chicago's sports headlines David it's the TV podcast. -- We kick off the podcast. With the Tribune's lead columnist David ha let's start in Miami first David you were down there for that came out in the final analysis of the BCS title game. Is big gap that big between the SEC. And everybody else. I think it is right now really did and I think that Alabama. You know you can't see anything other than the way they played and they showed that they proved it. I don't think that Notre Dame would finish you know seventh in the infancy I think that. News the combination of Alabama peaking at the right time and -- picking the wrong night to. Have the worst defense to collapse of the year at 529. Yards and gave up they -- tackle. That Alabama offense and one was overpowering. I think it's Notre Dame did represent itself very well but I don't think they're that bad I'm not sure Alabama is that good of Alabama was as good as they've played. In that game may be you know. Having a first round bye in the NFC play tough slots that's how good they were I mean they've got three potential NFL offensive linemen out there this must be -- -- different Nick -- that's the scary part. -- will Notre Dame are saying Ohio State or Michigan when will the talent level. Did it really -- I don't know the -- as the SEC LE -- how -- that I don't ever will because as it's a different emphasis in May be different. Recruiting priorities but I think what you're gonna find is gonna have to be on any given night it's gonna have to be that perfect game. It's going to have to be one of those college football moments that either Ohio State or Michigan weather's -- if you may be will be Notre Dame they're a year ahead of schedule. That's -- people forget -- I know Nick Saban is your -- schedule sure but they've won 34 years and also field. The elephant in the room you know is not the mascot for the -- Notre -- more than good enough on the other night but also this is more -- gotten little attention this week. Notre Dame's recruiting. Limitations. Almost makes it impossible to say that they're ever going to be as deep and talented as the schools and yes he's either gonna compete against. On that stage because they just cannot get those kind of kids into school northwestern faces at Stanford faces that. A lot of other schools are gonna face that and I think that's got to be taken into consideration it may never. Level out but that doesn't mean that on any given night. That Notre Dame could play as well or her ex team from the midwest could play as well of Alabama did that night it felt like I was watching the Bears game for a while. Nick Sabin said the Miami Dolphins experience made him realize he's a college coach -- think. He do you think Brian Kelly realizes the same thing you mean you talked about. Control. I heard something this past week that there when he took over. He had a locker set up the way he wanted it every Notre Dame player to. Assembled their locker. That I don't think works for the guys that get paid millions on Sundays writes a word about this -- you know the other day in -- story that he pops in my -- never -- question comes up Lou Holtz. You know. In the mid ninety's told me that you know he Russa that there's morning practice we've -- -- viewed the Jets. When you resigned to week to go there -- three intensity you know god did not put me here to coach NFL. Players and I think that that self awareness is something that a lot of college coaches. You know struggle with I think that -- Nick Saban talked about it lead after the game is that you know maybe this is where I belong. Brian Kelly has you know not said that but he's implied that it's kind of danced the dance very well Chip Kelly -- that realization. I think different guys will pat it's your path is Jerel does a guy I think that recognize how good he has it at northwestern. Is different dynamic that -- a good example. Little things like that they have they have all the power they want on campus you -- -- get that in an NFL. Front office early and NFL or in our organization like the Bears or wherever you go. So let's talk about that Bears coaching search it certainly has been extensive may be more extensive than we thought for talk about a written tests exactly from Phil Emery. Are there some folks rather national football -- saying that Emery is interviewing folks. -- to just get into now on other teams and how other schemes are being -- at what do you say is stated that I should -- well yeah I don't. Because if you have an opportunity to tap into the brains of as many different offensive mind did you can during the process. Do you obviously which are doing isn't working and you haven't had. Valuable franchise quarterback for four years there have been ranked higher than 23 in the league in offense so he wants to interview ever won from you know the Seahawks for the Packers. To the Broncos go ahead you know you're given these guys an opportunity to state their case to impress you to get -- job -- only 32 of which exist. So I think that's a bigger concern around the league with head coaches with general managers. It kind of I think that's where the complaints started like was this guy do when he's got thirteen interviews lined up why is he doing this him he's trying to steal our stuff. And I know I know for a fact that two of the guys involved in this or the teams from two of those guys they have those real concerns that this is the only reason. The it is so expensive so I think it's one of those things NFL coaches are paranoid and this is these complaints -- sort of product that. It seems like it's always Jay Cutler bashing season. IA certainly. -- I'm with a lot of people I am I am perplexed in my own mind where I stand. On Jay Cutler. I think I want him to be the Bears franchise quarterback got one that's in state day one when they made the trade and I still think he can be that guy I think he has matured. In his time here in Chicago but. This decision whoever they go out and yet. To beat that -- -- quarterbacks coach and that. Our offensive minded head coach. This is that this is a huge year for Jay Cutler do you believe that he is still the Bears franchise quarterback that say. Phil Emery leads us to bully. Without a doubt I don't think that you can have any other. Thought process right now after the Bears because. He he can make the job very attractive he can make the job not so attractive as well but you've got to think positive going into this you've got to sell the said the idea. If you protect this quarterback as you know he Denver did. In 2082 for 4500 yards and was sacked you know well eleven times. That's the standard that's that you think you can attain and that's the potential that teases general managers. So I think that's one thing that's -- to keep in -- the other way and is that you you can't let that dictate who you hire they'll. If there is that personality disconnect if there is a history if there is something about. The head coach and that he doesn't like about Jay Cutler may want to go a different direction. You know yeah and I use this term not to be disrespectful -- Jays personnel but you can't be paralyzed by petulant yeah you can't let his history dictate your future. And I think that's one thing that I believe is that as as the general manager searching for your next head coach. You factor that in. The committee appealing. But you don't let it be the final decision maker because you there are other things you have to really include. In this whole process how much would you allowed Jay to be a part of the not -- -- us not at all yeah because. Again you you're not making this decision based time. A guy that you might not be totally sold out as a franchise -- I think that you know the term franchise quarterback we use a lot and I've used -- a lot and I believe he can be that guy but. I also believe that he's been too inconsistent to assume that he will be so you're not contractually obligated beyond next year. Until you really have made that long term commitment to marry him right in it you're not really what you're dating right now yeah he is an. Earned the respected that he needs to have his contract -- up before the final year he know he has now I think. Being an easy in a year might actually really benefit. I think he may focus and he may have to really concentrate on fundamentals if I know I've got a four year deal I'm always more powerful than they guy they just hired as head coach. I don't know that's necessarily have the best situation project quarterbacks are like head coaches OK that lame duck status is fine right because there and there to prove it here. NJ -- there is an entering the prove that year of his career because he's got to produce are more consistent basis. Then he hasn't Chicago hit an opportunity down the stretch here he wasn't great -- good. Not good enough but he certainly wasn't great if you're -- those decisions are made for you. Quickly let's run through a couple things -- while not a great leader Chicago sports Tony thirteenth. Who's the team we're going to be talking about in Chicago that had the best year 2013. I think the Blackhawks. Could do -- again that benefits from 48 game season high I think they have a lot to prove. Com we're talking about a team that has two straight first round exits are they have a lot of opportunity here I think maybe the Blackhawks of of the choices. Northwestern. They're gonna are they can build on that bowl win. Or have they reached their ceiling in the Big -- about maintaining a relative to maintain that if you Pat Fitzgerald you want to. You give me another ten win guy next year. Ohio State and end Penn State are going to be back in the mix the bull mix that I think Ohio State amateur with troops to status is but. That's not gonna get any easier they're not going away so you wanna maintain and that's a great season for Northwestern's. -- gave up a little bit later.
